I just spent a week in London. At 7 a.m., the streets are busy with people going to work. Is that the only part of Europe where people still work hard?
My hope is that things will more or less continue as they have been during the SBY and Jokowi’s terms. The democracy in Indonesia has its own sambal flavors. But so far, each successive president has been able to keep the country on an upward trajectory.
The pressure on Prabowo to uphold his predecessors' legacy will be considerable. He has shown himself to be a pragmatic politician, and the selection of Gibran as his running mate is hopefully a sign that Prabowo is more influenced by the policies of his vice-president's father rather than those of his own father-in-law.
So what does that mean for Indonesia? The country has been a role model for emerging markets, consistently growing its GDP by over 5% annually for over two decades. It’s also the third-largest democracy and has the largest Muslim population of any country in the world.
Is all of that progress at risk?
