I understand that the social security conversation is political poison. But I’m not running for office so I don’t care about that. Taking huge chunks out of the paychecks of young working Americans in order to pay for the retirements of older Americans who have a net worth several times higher, all to prop up a system that everyone knows likely won’t be there when those younger people are retirement age themselves, is morally abhorrent and economically insane. Everyone knows it, too, but we’re held hostage by elderly politicians who refuse to surrender power, and older voters who, as a group (with exceptions, obviously), simply don’t care all that much about the financial and cultural future their grandchildren will inherit.
vitamin D crushes depression: in a landmark study with over 7000 middle aged adults, high levels of vitamin D were associated with 43% lower depression and 67% lower panic.

reading the beginning of infinity by @DavidDeutschOxf … starting to have more sympathy for the simps of authority.
It was not long ago that knowledge was ordained only by authority. Before the Enlightenment it was widely assumed the important truths were already known, and the state, church, monarch would tell people how to think and what to believe.
The Enlightenment, 12 generations ago was the first major new tradition of 'Nullius in verba' (take no one's word for it)
Science had legs, questioning the universe…questioning authority.
So in the grand scheme of things, the human inclination to question authority and the validity of its stature is new: just 12 generations, compared to the roughly 440 since the start of agrarian society.
Andddd take into consideration authority has gotten wiser, propaganda more manipulative. The use of media, co-opting of science "trust the experts". WW2 all it took was leaflets, and a voice over the radio to convince people the devil was coming for their way of life. Now we're bombarded by interconnected and complex media campaigns, psyops, and legislation.
All in all, I'd bet there are fewer authority simps now than in the 1500s… As a species, zooming out, think we are on a positive slope

this is insane. i genuinely don't understand why ambitious people aren't shown this lecture before their careers start consuming their entire lives.
clayton christensen spent his career studying why successful companies collapse. in his final class, he asked students to apply the theory to themselves: if you keep allocating your time the same way, what life are you actually building?
he had already seen the answer in his own harvard mba class. everyone looked successful at the fifth reunion; by the 10th, 15th, 20th, and 25th, many were unhappy, divorced, and living far from their children.
work shows you the score immediately. close a sale, ship a product, finish a presentation, earn a promotion, get paid.
an hour with your child may produce nothing you can measure today; it may take 20 years to understand what that hour built. so the next free hour goes back to work, one rational decision at a time.
this is how people build lives they never planned: through hundreds of right decisions that lead in the wrong direction, day after day.
money, titles, and headcount are easy to count. christensen believed a life should be measured by the people who became better because you were there.
he died in 2020.
one question remains: if someone saw only where your time, energy, and attention went this year, what would they think actually mattered to you?
the full 19-minute lecture is in the video below.
