Okay okay not all of them. But Cyprus, Lebanon, Argentina, Zimbabwe, Indonesia… either people don’t recover their money or they recover it devalued. I can also mention the 2022 crypto banks collapse in the USA. These were basically FRBs but without a central bank that could bail them out by devaluing the currency. From a consumers perspective, anybody who can avoid FRBs should do so. The risk is not worth the small interest return.
But that’s exactly what happened in Lebanon in 2019-2020 Mr Selgin. Interestingly, within weeks of the bank run, these _same_ banks opened so-called “fresh dollar” accounts (which have 100% reserves) and people immediately started using them and are still using them to this day! While nobody dares to deposit a dime in an FRB account. Also, all new banks (eg Whish Money) are 100% reserves. Everything is 100% reserve now. And that’s the only reason why commerce is still possible in the country. Fact is, FRB is a dangerous game for any country that doesn’t have a global reserve currency like the usd or euro.
The most outrageous tax schemes are _not_ intended to pass, but are rather meant to absorb people’s anger away from the other tax schemes, which are intended to pass.
⚡️Lebanon’s draft 2027 budget plans to impose an 11% VAT on foreign digital services, apps and platforms, including Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, ChatGPT, app stores and cloud services.
@riachi_jean Another “possible path”… Abolish the CNSS and let each employee decide how to allocate their own money as any adult and responsible person should.
@DaouMark You’re ignoring the productivity side of the equation. Total incomes cannot exceed total productivity. Incomes are low simply because productivity is low.
To increase productivity you need to reduce taxes and regulations, basically the opposite of redistributionist policies.
What is the reasoning behind the Lebanese imposition of price controls and import barriers on cement?
What do they fear would happen if cement prices and importation were freed? (Besides suppressing local quarrying)

🗣️ Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri:
We are not against negotiating with Israel, provided that it is ‘indirect’.
We renew the call for the displaced to wait and not return to South Lebanon currently.
@ikreidieh I think the idea is that a global, blanket criminalization of any and all civilian-to-civilian contact regardless of context or intent is a human rights issue more than anything else. Millions of people are automatically criminalized.
“… we won’t allow justified cost increases abroad to translate into unjustified price increases inside the country…”
I give this quote a grade of F for economic knowledge but A+ for poetic value 👍
Lebanese midwits: “Civil war is impossible because there’s only one armed militia.”
Me: “But this means they win without fighting, which is even worse!”
I’m hearing many Lebanese pundits refer to a supreme being called “Chapter 7” that would come down from heaven and solve all the country’s problems.
So I decided to go do some research to find out what they’re talking about.
