I am a tech optimist, but the head of @AnthropicAI Alignment Team putting the risk of AI eradicating humanity at more than 10% should give every entrepreneur and politician sufficient reason to rethink the current path of AI development.

ANY risk above zero should make us pause and think. Safety needs to trump speed.

And this is not only about avoiding the worst-case scenario of AI completely wiping out humanity. Even if we can avoid that - and even in the best-case scenario - I can see the sudden disruption of almost everything we hold dear, on a scale never seen before, driving humanity literally crazy.

So, while I am usually a libertarian, I believe AI needs proper regulation - not just at the national level, but through joint efforts globally, especially between the US and China.

Because the real issue is that we are playing a speed game between East and West, with neither side trusting the other. With the argument, “But if we don’t do it, the other side will win,” we are potentially driving humanity into the abyss.

And the saddest part: We might be only a few meters away from the finish line after a long marathon.

I do believe AI has the potential to usher in a golden age and to solve humanity’s biggest challenges. But we have lived and coped with our problems and limitations - like aging and disease, for example - since the dawn of humanity. We can live with those limitations for a few more years.

There is no reason to be too hasty now and, by working “quick and dirty,” trip over our own feet and literally commit suicide just centimeters before the finish line.

Let’s pause, breathe, and think.

🇺🇸🇪🇺🇺🇦🇷🇺‼️🚨 IMPORTANT: Russia’s ICBM launch at Ukraine has triggered early warning systems today and such launches are by default assumed to be nuclear.

So for a short moment US and Europe thought Russia is nuking Ukraine.

They only knew that it was not nuclear by checking if the city Dnipro is still physically there after the impacts.

-> Essentially, If Russia decides to nuke Ukraine … the west will watch.

Second important thing to note, Russia has proven that it can deliver a conventional or nuclear payload to any place without a problem.
