🚨 Da’Shaun L. Harrison at Socialism 2026 argues that the policing of “Black fat flesh” is foundational to broader "entire systems of governance."
“Without a population to discipline, there would be no BMI, no obesity epidemic, and no medical or scientific institutions organized around managing fatness,” Harrison says.
Harrison argues that diet culture trains “obedience,” “self-denial,” and “discipline,” before expanding the framework into what Harrison calls “body fascism.”
That includes state efforts to define which bodies are protected or erased, calls for sovereignty intended to maintain borders, and the treatment of Black flesh itself.
Harrison then turns to Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs, arguing that the broader effort to treat fatness as a public-health problem cannot be separated from Blackness.
At this point, I am genuinely at a loss for words.
There’s a whole class of people who continuously find themselves in situations like this, situations completely unknown to normal well adjusted people, and at no point do they consider they had a hand in creating the situation. I’ve referred to it before as the cloud of chaos. They’re constantly being cheated on, arrested, yelled at, fired, have health issues, being evicted, just an endless stream of interpersonal drama. They insist it’s never their fault.
Lindsey Clancy defense attorney Kevin Reddington says he’s “so proud” of the jury foreperson, who he says was a female, for identifying the lone juror who was holding out and calling it out in a note to the court.
