Rep. Sarah McBride Says Dems Are "Rightfully Moving Away" From Telling Voters They Are "Bad People" For Holding Heterodox Positions On Trans Issues

In an interview today with @lxeagle17 of @TheArgument, Rep @SarahEMcBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress, said Democratic candidates running in states like Ohio or Iowa "should articulate what their genuine position is on" transgender issues, "and that is ultimately going to result in many of these candidates in red states having heterodox positions on specific policies, whether it be gender or guns." She continued: "That truth can also coexist with the truth that we need to be respectful of one another."

Rep. McBride said:

"I think the challenge for us before, which I think we're rightfully moving away from, is that for too many voters, they interpreted the way our our coalition [the Democrats] talked about a lot of these issues as a sign that we thought they were bad people, that we did not like them or respect them, and I think we are rightfully moving away from that. And I think it's both demonstrating in real time to these voters who might disagree with me on a lot of issues.

"That just because we disagree, I do not think they're a bad person. In fact, I value them as neighbors. I want to be in conversation with them. That is pluralism in practice. That is democracy in practice. And in so doing, I think it makes them care about those issues less because it makes them realize that if I don't believe that their particular position on any specific policy is going to determine whether I think they're good or bad, then they aren't going to misinterpret that issue as the top priority for me or my party."

Asked by Lakshya Jain about Amy Acton in Ohio or like Rob Sand in Iowa, each of whom have expressed opposition to cross-sex sports participation (much to the fury of hardline trans activists like Erin Reed), Rep. McBride said:

"I think two truths can exist here as these candidates navigate terrain that is far more conservative than the terrain I'm navigating on the whole in Delaware. The first is that candidates should run based on what they genuinely believe and feel. I mean, I think they should they should they should articulate what their genuine position is on this, and that is ultimately going to result in many of these candidates in red states having heterodox positions on specific policies, whether it be gender or guns, the the list goes on. That truth can also coexist with the truth that we need to be respectful of one another. That doesn't just mean respectful in the debate; it also means respectful in how we're talking about the communities impacted by these policies, and it would be my hope, as I have articulated to candidates that I have spoken with, that regardless of whether you agree with me on individual policy positions, that let us let us all speak about the people that we are seeking to represent, and that includes LGBTQ people with respect."

Kmele Foster speaking with such glittering precision and composure here that Hill can do little more than sputter. It takes a lot of smarts to be this clear.

What stands out is not just the substance of the debate but Foster’s methodical, level-headed reasoning and how flummoxed Hill is to confront the most basic request that he defend his position. He clearly expects that he can help himself to sweeping, baseless claims and rely on the rhetorical intimidation of assumed moral superiority to make his point where argument is wanting.

What you’re looking at is the difference between sloganeering and thought. Even if you disagree with Foster and agree with Hill you’re confronted at a formal level with the sheer disparity in logical rigor. Hard not to take a certain sheer pleasure in watching someone dispute so elegantly.

This is one reason why the attack on empathy is so evil. If we have to wait for person after person to experience the brutality of this administration before we wake up, then we'll inflict an immense amount of pain on our country. But if, instead, we could place ourselves in the shoes of the immigrant in chains, then we can see the injustice more plainly.

And no, this does not mean that we can't or shouldn't deport illegal immigrants when appropriate. It doesn't mean we must have open borders. But we can't lose our own humanity and decency in the process, and we must not use brutality as an instrument of enforcement.
