After reading about Dame Jenni Murray’s death the inquest this week said she crashed after being dazzled by vehicle lights.
Does anyone else find modern LED headlights on cars so bright they’re actually dangerous?
If you want to help the birds in your garden, just add water - especially in a heatwave!
Here are two Great Spotted Woodpeckers, juvenile and adult female, drinking and bathing in my Suffolk garden, summer 2026.

The peacock butterfly lays its eggs only on stinging nettles. Not as a first choice — as the only choice. 🦋
No nettles nearby means no eggs, no caterpillars, no chrysalis, no butterfly. The equation is that straightforward.
The black spiny caterpillars you find in groups on nettles through July and August are almost always peacock larvae. The red admiral and the comma depend on the same plant.
What a single garden can do: leave one square metre of nettles in a sunny corner. Do not cut them back until September. That single measure is enough.
The peacock overwinters as an adult — in log piles, outhouses, sheds, and loft spaces. In March it is among the first butterflies to reappear, emerging as soon as the first nettle growth shows.
The patch of nettles in the corner of your garden is the nursery of one of Britain's most beautiful butterflies. 🌿
