⚡️February 26 is marked in the Ukrainian calendar as the Day of Resistance to the Occupation of Crimea.

Almost 131 thousand people with disabilities live on the peninsula.

The monitoring group analyzed Ukrainian and Russian law, and media and conducted a survey of people with disabilities, lawyers, and advocates working on the protection of their rights. The materials were collected remotely and mostly online.

🔴People with disabilities are also among the political prisoners and persecuted for their civic position. Among the 116 Ukrainian political prisoners, 15 are elderly people and people with disabilities.

For almost 9 years, Crimea has been under Russian occupation. But we know: Crimea is Ukrainian. And people with disabilities there also need our attention. That is why last year, in partnership with the Crimean Human Rights Group, we conducted the Monitoring of their rights.

It is difficult for people with disabilities to meet even their basic needs, as pensions and benefits do not differ much from Ukrainian ones, with a threefold higher subsistence level.

We found that the peninsula does not use a human rights-based approach to disability, and the medical model of disability is predominantly used.
