Dr Ivo Pitanguy – the legendary cosmetic surgeon who treated royalty, presidents, and Hollywood A-listers – bought this 75-acre island off Rio de Janeiro in 1973. It's hitting the market for the first time in over 50 years.

The reported guest list reads like fiction: Tom Cruise, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Brigitte Bardot, President Jimmy Carter, and Katie Holmes among them. (Pitanguy never confirmed his clients – the media did that for him.)

Six modernist bungalows with curved white walls and floor-to-ceiling glass sit across the island – a style the listing agents say bears "a striking resemblance" to Scaramanga's island lair in The Man with the Golden Gun.

The development potential is where it gets interesting for property minds. Existing permissions allow expansion to 2,782 sqm of built area, and agents at London's Beauchamp Estates suggest a proposed single mansion on the eastern end could lift the island's value by an additional US$135 million.

Founding Director Gary Hersham says it could remain an ultra-private retreat or become "a highly exclusive Necker Island style hospitality resort with 5-star amenities of global relevance."

Accessible by helicopter in 40 minutes from Rio or speedboat in 15 minutes from the mainland, with a marina built for 50-metre yachts.
