@SimonPB@Dopam1ne@Moneyweb Was being conservative at 30% income tax. Depending on where you invest and what sort of fees you pay, it is very hard to justify investing before paying off your bond surely? Maybe I'm missing something.
@Dopam1ne@Moneyweb@SimonPB Agreed. Most importantly, 10% isn't nearly enough. After tax at, say 30%, your return is only 7%. Probably less than your bond. I'd rather pay off the bond then use the extra cashflow to invest
@hazelwood_dave Agreed, many people forget that FCF is the best indicator of a company's health. What they do with such cash is also something to consider! Investing in growth vs giving cash back to investors?
@TheAfricaReport@TullowOilplc So sad that we are still drilling for oil when we know we are killing our future. Why can't Africa leapfrog the developed world into renewables?
@hazelwood_dave The problem is that the fees and relatively low growth of those funds means that you could actually invest better. But that is the fault of the funds not the tax system. 10X has a low cost retirement fund that is worth noting
@hazelwood_dave I think that a forced savings for retirement for the public is actually the point. The tax benefit is real though isn't it? Tax deduction now when your taxable income is high and then taxed when paid out when you are older and your taxable income is lower, so lower bracket?
@NeilView@heidi_vdh@ShareenSingh8 South African here. The indignity black and POC faced here under Apartheid was absolutely horrific. Having some of your freedoms limited because you are choosing go against public health measures is simply not comparable in the slightest.
Gwede, they’re thriving because they made the most of the cheapest & best energy tech at the time. The cheapest and best today? Solar, wind, hydro and storage. South Africa has a massive competitive advantage. Starting up an oil & gas industry in 2021 would be economic suicide.
@GwedeMantashe1 I implore you and everyone supporting this to read this book. The discovery and exploitation of oil/gas has a negative impact on the economic well-being of the average citizen. The impacts on the environment are swept under the carpet. This is catastrophic https://t.co/sEg8aGn4gM
Anyone arguing that the @Shell destruction of the Wild Coast is positive for the people of SA because of jobs/economic growth, I strongly recommend you take a look at this book: https://t.co/E2sVx3eQU7
@nickhedley
Rachel Maddow even gives examples how, in almost all cases, the net economic position on the everyday citizen is significantly worse off than before the oil/gas was discovered. This isn't even taking into account the impact on the environment, health, tourism, etc
Brilliant! Can we have more companies (especially construction companies) reduce the urgency of new trees by ending deforestation. I am looking at you @BalwinProp
