In love with Jesus, Cliff, JJJ&Z, books, sand, any trip that requires a passport, and chicken artichoke pizza. UMC pastor/church planter MDiv-Asbury/DMin-Wesley
This was a powerful word about not making suffering our identity, but trusting that God will use suffering to shape our character and grow our capacity to experience joy.If you can still experience suffering in this life, then you can still experience hope. https://t.co/f22l0YiRu1
The way the gospel writers begin their story of Jesus gives us a clue about their message:
Matthew takes us back to Abraham— a new covenant is here!
Mark starts us with good news— a new King is here!
Luke takes us back to Adam— a new Human is here!
John takes us back to Genesis— a new creation is here!
“Real freedom, Christ says, is not the absence of limitations on our actions, but the joyous acceptance of limitations inherent in the new loyalty. Elton Trueblood, The Yoke of Christ
The Bible says, "The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit" (Proverbs 15:4).
The content of our words matters, as does the tone in which we address others.
As a Charles Wesley fan, I’m here to help with one of the best (and most often incorrectly edited) Christmas hymn lyrics of all.
Do you know which lyric it is?
Hint: it’s in “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” /1
“All things work together for good to them that love God.” Fellow Christians might remind each other of Romans 8:28 as a way of offering comfort, consolation, and reassurance that things will all work in the end. Except it isn’t what St Paul wrote. https://t.co/a6vAXDl4t9
Revisiting Alpha.
I was never a huge fan of Alpha (sorry @alphacourse ).
I helped lead one sometime around 2001. It was alright.
When I took up a prison chaplain role 16 months ago, I was surprised to learn there was a thing called Alpha Prisons. (Surely Alpha is too middle class for prisons?)
Anyway — I have the new Alpha materials a go.
Was surprised to learn how relevant and engaging the materials are.
So far I’ve launched 5 Alpha Courses in a prison context (each course drawing around 10–12 participants). I’ve also launched two Alphas as part of our church small group ministry in Alloa and Stirling. Each group drawing between 5–10 participants.
Alpha is a perfect combination of relational, hospitable, and missional.
If like me, you wrote it off, why not give it another try?

Only half of the pastor’s work is to gather the people together for worship. The other half is to send them back to their daily tasks equipped to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. If we forget this second part, the other can be positively dangerous.
We can never understand the life of faith seen in scripture and in serious Christian living unless we drop the idea of faith as a “blind leap” and understand that faith is commitment to action, often beyond our natural abilities, based upon knowledge of God #DallasWillard
@CarolynCMoore@GlobalMethodism Carolyn I loved your comment “It is actually supposed to be a miracle that the Church grows anyway.” I’ll be using that. Great episode!
No spiritual discipline can make God love you.
It’s too late for that. God already loves you.
But spiritual disciplines helps us to live in God's love, and offer it to others.
Today seems like a good day to remind you that I've written a little on what happens when women lead. Buy a copy for yourself and for a woman leader in your life who could use a little encouragement.
A website has been launched to preserve the work of a #UMC pastor on the occasion of his 100th birthday. The Rev. Ellsworth Kalas died in 2015 at 92. The website contains radio devotionals, newsletter columns and books written by the beloved clergyman. https://t.co/ZvkP1CqeCP
Here's one way to diagnose why different Christian communities focus on such different things. It's rooted in how we understand our identity & God's...
🧵 At a glance, revivals in the US have never been identical. In each, the Spirit seems to speak to specific generational needs.
Consider Asbury, a revival led beautifully by Gen Z:
1) The most anxious generous in history experienced a revival characterized by *peace.*
