Now only posting as @judithleask on the blue sky place. Editor of books, creative writer, CIEP member, reader, cyclist, messy gardener, Star Wars fan. She/her.
Remember the protests against Section 28, against coal-fired power stations, for votes for women? None of them would possible today without risking serious jail time. This is the threat to democracy in the UK right now.
It’s time for Labour to remember its roots and reinstate the right to peaceful protest.
Thanks to @ChrisGPackham for the narration

I've loved Ursula K Le Guin's quote for a while and I'm so happy this is true. 'Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words.'

I'm loving this book for the distance between the time of the telling and the time of the action. From the first chapter, the first-person narrator is reflecting on events from a later point in time. Great for foreshadowing!

No close reflections from an unknown person. And no unexpected visits inside the head of a minor character for two paragraphs in chapter 17. In short, the author decided on a POV strategy, understood how to do it well, and stuck to it throughout. Bravo. (2)
People ask me if being an editor kills my enjoyment of reading - and no, it gives me a deeper appreciation. This book's a great example of third person subjective omniscient POV - gentle movement between heads not dizzying leaps (1)

Here's a taste of Brummie culture that my lovely @The_CIEP#ciep2024 friends will love. This young person's spoken word performances are even better than her written poetry. And isn't this lovely?
Enjoy the rest of the conference - don't be strangers!

Being at the @the_CIEP conference always reminds me why I love editing and writing fiction, and makes me want to learn from all my fellow editing nerds. Time for a drink, first, though!

@emilyhewertson@ByDonkeys Comedy is often the most effective tool for taking someone down. And I can't believe she's still got a platform. Every person in this country is perceptibly worse off directly because of her actions. And she's taking her gold-plated pension out of our money, too
With the Greens now having the same number of seats as Reform, the UK media should provide them the same platform and level of coverage as Farage’s ilk. Will it happen though? #GE24
@HNossProofreads Would really love to see the Greens have more of a voice than I think they're going to. I think they'd have had a massively bigger vote if it weren't for the need to vote tactically. They have the same number of seats as Reform, but I bet Farage will constantly be in our faces 🤮
This is like having been liberated from a brutal occupation, so you're celebrating, but by a group you're fairly unimpressed with and in a world that's collapsing, so you just hope they're going to turn out better than they seem ...
#Elections2024
@TacticalRonin@Joannechocolat One day that will change. It could be today. Or perhaps your vote today will be counted in the national level of support for the party you voted for, and demonstrate support for their ideas. And maybe one day we'll have proportional representation!
Such a treat to work with the editors at @Scholastic and the most lovely author @BillWoodAuthor . Looking forward to seeing Let's Split Up in the shops - and, of course, to copyediting the next zany heart-warming mystery that Bill writes.

My new favourite writing mantra: 'You must never think at the typewriter - you must feel.' (Ray Bradbury). If you want that narrative closeness and not just stage directions it's definitely true.
