LA deliberately cut its housing capacity from ~10M to ~4M homes through single-family zoning. It hit that cap in the 1990s, then added 5x more jobs than homes 2010–2015.
The result is one of the world's least affordable cities.
Jeff Bezos on CNBC: "If people want me to pay more billions, then let's have that debate, but don't pretend that that's gonna solve the problem. You could double the taxes I pay, and it's not gonna help that teacher in Queens.... Airbnb isn't causing high rents. What's really causing high rent is government intervention."
Bernie's 5% wealth tax would:
-Raise starting teacher pay to $60,000
-Give $12,000 to a working family of 4
-Expand Medicare for dental, vision, hearing
-Guarantee universal childcare
-End homelessness
Bezos would see his wealth drop from $279 billion to $265 billion. Poor guy.
@morematerial We also need to build our bench. Liberals trust politicians more who go through the “proper” process starting with local government, then state, then federal office. We don’t have that kind of bench of socialist candidates ready for federal office in California. Gotta build it.
Zohran Mamdani turning a prison into a nonprofit grocery store says everything...less punishment, more basic needs. That’s the direction politics should go!!!!
