Same here. In sports it builds grit and an inner drive to improve just to prove to yourself that you're good enough. My career response was to grow my own projects on the side that I owned and controlled, or else I was dying inside.

My son gutted through an extremely disappointing football season personally on offensive line. He got his player recognition at the banquet where they said “he always shows up, does his assignment with no fanfare and goes home”. On the way home I asked him how he felt about that and then offered up my view - that’s exactly how they would describe me at the office, but it made me a little sad because a dad wants his son to be better than he is. He paused for a minute and then said “I didn’t know that dad. How do you fight through it at work all the time?” The verb told me everything about how he really felt. It’ll take some time to shake it off, will be interested if he’s discouraged or motivated to play next season.
