Holocaust-denial arguments sometimes point to facilities such as a post office or hospital as supposed evidence that Auschwitz was simply a normal labor or internment camp. This argument ignores both the scale and the complexity of the Auschwitz camp system.

Auschwitz served several functions at the same time. It was a concentration camp and, from 1942, the largest center for the mass murder of European Jews. The existence of particular facilities for selected groups of registered prisoners does not contradict the murder of around 1.1 million people.

Mail: Some registered prisoners were allowed to send highly censored letters. They could not describe actual camp conditions and were expected to reassure their families that they were well. Many categories of prisoners had no such right, while the hundreds of thousands of Jews murdered immediately after arrival were never registered at all.

The brothel: A prisoner brothel operated in Block 24 from 1943. Women were coerced into sexual exploitation, and access was restricted to a small group of privileged prisoners as part of an SS system intended to increase labor productivity.

Sport and physical exercise: What prisoners often called “sport” meant exhausting compulsory exercises imposed as punishment or harassment. Boxing and other sporting activities did occur in exceptional circumstances, but they tell us little about the everyday conditions experienced by the vast majority of inmates.

The hospital: Prisoner hospitals existed because the SS needed to maintain part of its forced-labor population. At the same time, conditions were often catastrophic, and hospital blocks became places of selections and killing. Sick prisoners could be murdered by phenol injection or selected for the gas chambers. Some hospital facilities were also used for criminal medical experiments.

The swimming pool: The frequently photographed basin at Auschwitz I was originally constructed as a water reservoir. It was later adapted for swimming and used by a very limited group of privileged prisoners. It was never a recreational facility available to the general camp population.

The basic mistake in this denial argument is to assume that the existence of any hospital, correspondence, sporting activity or other facility somehow excludes mass murder. It does not. Auschwitz was a vast camp complex in which very different groups of people could experience radically different conditions, while at the same time hundreds of thousands of others were being transported there and murdered shortly after arrival.

Registered prisoners at Auschwitz, particularly many non-Jewish political prisoners, were allowed to send and receive official correspondence. But this fact is often heavily distorted in Holocaust denial, where the existence of camp mail, letter forms and postage stamps is presented as supposed evidence that Auschwitz was a humane place of detention or work.

The reality was very different. Correspondence was strictly limited, heavily censored and, in some cases, deliberately used by the SS as a tool of deception.

First, the right to write letters did not apply to the overwhelming majority of people deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Around 900,000 Jews were murdered in the gas chambers shortly after arrival without ever being registered as prisoners. They received no prisoner numbers and had no opportunity to send correspondence. Registered Jews, Soviet POWs and several other prisoner categories were also generally excluded from normal correspondence.

For those prisoners who were permitted to write, the system was highly restrictive. Letters had to be written in German and were checked by the camp censorship office. Prisoners could not describe hunger, violence, illness or the actual conditions in the camp. Instead, they were expected to use reassuring formulas stating that they were healthy and well. Attempts to communicate information that aroused the suspicion of the censors could result in punishment.

Camp correspondence could also be used directly for propaganda and deception. One striking example was the so-called Briefaktion. Jewish prisoners from the Theresienstadt family camp in Birkenau were ordered to write postcards intended to reassure relatives and the outside world. In some cases, cards were deliberately post-dated and sent after their authors had already been murdered. Prisoners were also instructed to use the misleading address “Arbeitslager Birkenau bei Neu Bieruń” rather than Auschwitz.

So the existence of mail at Auschwitz is not evidence of humane treatment. It shows instead how the SS controlled communication with the outside world and, when useful, exploited it as part of a broader system of censorship, propaganda and deception.

It depends on whether we mean registered prisoners or all people deported to Auschwitz.

Among the roughly 400,000 people registered as prisoners, about half were Jews and half were non-Jews. The largest non-Jewish group were Poles, most of whom came from a Roman Catholic background. There were also Roma and Sinti, Soviet POWs, and prisoners of many other nationalities.

So it would be more accurate to say that about half of the registered prisoners were non-Jewish, rather than simply describing all of them as Christians.

The picture changes completely when we look at everyone deported to Auschwitz. Of at least 1.3 million deportees, about 1.1 million were Jews. Most Jews selected for immediate murder were never registered as prisoners at all.

That is why Jews constituted about half of the registered prisoner population, but around 90% of all those murdered at Auschwitz.
