ROLLS-ROYCE HAS MADE THE TRENT XWB-84 EP THE NEW STANDARD FOR THE A350-900
The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 Enhanced Performance (EP) is proving that even a highly successful engine can still be improved.
Originally targeting around a 1% fuel-burn reduction, the XWB-84 EP has reportedly delivered savings closer to 1.8% in service, with Delta among the airlines reporting strong results.
The improvements come without changing the engine’s basic architecture, meaning it remains compatible with the existing A350-900 wing pylons. Rolls-Royce focused on areas including airflow optimization, cruise performance and internal cooling efficiency to squeeze more efficiency from the proven design.
The results have been significant enough that Rolls-Royce has retired the baseline XWB-84 from new sales campaigns, with the Enhanced Performance version now becoming the standard offering for new A350-900s.
