When the original AlphaFold came out, I don't think I was the only one who was excited but also a little disappointed. No physics? No dynamics? No folding trajectory? This problem I've been interested in for a long time is just a bunch of statistics in a trenchcoat?
But of course AlphaFold didn't completely "solve" the protein folding problem and it didn't end structural biology. It just became a tool of the trade. It let experts focus on new and even more interesting problems. And the ecosystem that grew up around it and its various descendants let scientists who weren't structural biologists make good models and think in terms of 3D structure about their other biological data.
Isn't that what's going to happen with LLMs that can do math?
