For 67 years, Dale Schroeder showed up to the same carpentry job in Iowa. He never married, never had children, drove an old pickup truck, owned just two pairs of jeans, and carried the same lunch box to work every day.

Few people knew that while living such a simple life, he had quietly saved nearly 3000000 dollars.

Before his death in 2005, Dale visited his lawyer with one request. He said he had never been able to attend college because his family couldn't afford it, and he wanted other young people to have the opportunity he never had.

His entire fortune was placed into a scholarship fund for Iowa students who had the ability to succeed but lacked the money to pursue higher education.

Over the following years, 33 students earned college degrees because of a man they had never met. They became doctors, teachers, therapists, engineers, and other professionals. They now call themselves "Dale's Kids" and gather each year around his old metal lunch box to remember the carpenter whose generosity changed their lives.

Dale never asked for recognition. His only wish was that those students would one day help someone else, just as he had helped them.
