Fred Penner and Mr. Dressup is a pretty great crossover, but the story behind it carries some tragedy.

About two weeks before he was to appear on Fred Penner's Place in 1992, Ernie Coombs' wife Marlene was struck & killed by a car while she was out shopping in Toronto.

Penner contacted Coombs and told him that it was okay if he cancelled the shows or rebooked.
Coombs said no. He and his wife had talked about it before she died and he wanted to be on the show.

"The energy that the crew gave him, when he came on set, was overwhelming to say the least," Penner said.

They did two shows. At the end of the second show, a song was scheduled called "Together, Tomorrow"

Penner and Coombs sat on the log on the set getting ready to say goodbye to the audience with that song at the end of the second show.
Penner stated that the song became about Ernie and his wife and both he and Ernie were on the brink of tears while singing the song.

"That was absolutely the most beautiful and most intense moment I ever had on the series," Penner said.

In 1954, American tap dancer Arthur Duncan made his debut on the Betty White show. Betty White faced criticism for featuring a Black performer, but she responded with, "I'm sorry. Live with it." She even gave Duncan more airtime. However, shortly after, her show was canceled.

Duncan had kind words for Betty, saying, "She [Betty] is probably one of the nicest, grandest, and greatest people I've had the chance to meet in my life. Whenever she walked into a room, it lit up. She was very thoughtful and helpful. She launched me into show business."

Reflecting on the time he spent on Betty's show, Duncan mentioned, "During my appearance on [Betty's] show, some viewers from different areas resented the inclusion of Black Americans and threatened to withdraw their support. I was unaware of these events at the time and only learned about them several years later after Betty wrote her book. She explained it this way: 'Needless to say, we used Arthur Duncan every opportunity we could.' She stood up for her beliefs, and that resolved the situation."

Jacques (James) Baby was born 260 years ago today. Born in Detroit, he grew up to become one of Upper Canada's most influential politicians, the only French Catholic on the Executive Council.

He was the 2nd owner of the Mansion on Mill St.

In 1959, police were called to a segregated library when a Black 9-year-old boy trying to check out books refused to leave, after being told the library was not for Black people.

The boy, Ronald McNair, went on to became an astronaut. The library is also now named after him.
