Let me explain wildfires and climate change for the slow learners in the back.

More heat means thirstier air.

♦ Carbon emissions trap heat globally.
♦ Hotter air acts like a sponge.
♦ It sucks moisture out of plants.
♦ It sucks moisture out of soil.
♦ Dry plants turn into perfect tinder

Fire seasons are now longer.

♦ Snow melts much earlier in spring.
♦ Autumn rains arrive much later now.
♦ The dry period lasts weeks longer.
♦ Longer dry periods mean more fires.

Bugs are making it worse.

♦ Warmer winters fail to kill pests.
♦ Pine beetles are multiplying rapidly now.
♦ Pests kill millions of forest trees.
♦ Dead trees create massive fuel piles.

Extreme weather creates spark triggers.

♦ Climate change shifts atmospheric jet streams.
♦ This causes more frequent dry lightning.
♦ It also creates much stronger winds.
♦ Winds fan tiny sparks into infernos.

Climate change is the amplifier.

♦ Campfires and arson still start fires.
♦ Human carelessness triggers the initial spark.
♦ But climate change prepares the fuel.
♦ It turns small fires into monsters.

Scotland has just done something quietly brilliant for its birds 🐦

New buildings across the country will now have to include "swift bricks", hollow bricks built straight into the walls that give birds a safe place to nest.

It sounds like a small thing but it isn't. Swift numbers in the UK have fallen by around 60% since the mid-1990s, and one of the biggest reasons is heartbreakingly simple: modern buildings have nowhere for them to go. Swifts have always nested in the nooks and gaps of our houses, and as those disappeared, so did they.

The birds themselves make it worse by being loyal to a fault. Swifts return to the exact same nest site year after year, having flown thousands of miles from Africa to get there.

When they arrive to find it sealed up, some will keep flying at the spot again and again, sometimes injuring themselves in the process.

The bricks cost about £30 each. They need no maintenance, they don't affect insulation, and once they're in the wall, you'd never know they were there. Sparrows, starlings and house martins use them too, all species in trouble for the same reason.

One RSPB conservationist put it starkly. In his part of Glasgow, not a single swift bred in 2025, the first time in his 30 years there. He called it "nothing short of heartbreaking."

Scotland is the first country in the UK to write this into law. Campaigners are now hoping the rest follows.

A startling portal into the past: I have restored for you this incredible shot of St Paul's Cathedral in Dickensian London, which was photographed nearly 200 years ago! It was taken using the brand new daguerreotype process invented by Louis Daguerre the previous year in 1839.
This was the year 'The Old Curiosity Shop' was penned by Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria married Prince Albert.
It's sensational to think that this photograph was taken almost 60 years closer to the Cathedral's construction than to today!

Trump administration rolls back habitat protections for endangered species

@CrossCountryUK I’m currently on the Glasgow to Plymouth train (due 17.47). Couldn’t even get to our reserved seats it’s so crowded. Currently stood at end of carriage and were completely squashed in. How is this acceptable?

Did you know that if someone takes a knife to somewhere – a park for eg – and murders someone, the starting point for their jail sentence is 25 years. But if someone kills in the home with a knife already at the scene, like in the kitchen drawer, the starting point for their jail sentence is 10 years less 

Why? It doesn’t make sense 

Well now after incredibly determined campaigning by the mums of 3 young women – women who were killed in the home by their boyfriend or ex – the law is being changed

Carole Gould, Julie Devey and Elaine Newborough, from the charity Killed Women have been fighting for SEVEN years for the minimum sentence for domestic murder to be increased

Now it’s happening. The gov says it intends to close the 10 yr gap so domestic killers face higher sentences
