although she isn’t one for physical affection, she lets leah pull her into a hug, bringing herself to rest her hands against her back. the list of people she lets close is short—and this girl happens to be one of them. and… maybe she needs it right now, too.
her eyes squeeze
a gentle smile followed afterwards while she realized Romona was coming onto the boat. as she stopped from trying to get the boat started, Leah was holding on the side as the boat swayed a bit.
“It’s okay . . I just missed you.” she frowned a bit while slowly walking

“yeah, yeah… don’t get too soft on me,” she jokes before finally pulling away. “now, let’s look at what the problem is,” she adds, moving past her to the back of the boat. and when she tries to start it, the engine
ramona steps down into the boat, making it gently sway on the water beneath her weight.
“hey, leah,” she finally offers with a half-smile, a little nervous—something her awkward stance easily gives away.
“i am sorry i didn’t show up last summer.” she adds, quieter.
side eyeing her with a playful look on her face, she's throwing her hands up a bit with a soft sigh. leah was still trying to figure out everything since she moved on the island. she wanted to go get some stuff from the store, so she's been attempting to get the boat

ramona’s eyebrows knit together, her expression hardening into disbelief. for a moment, any other sound around her dulls, as the words ‘you don’t need to pretend you’re happy to see me’ echo in her mind. 𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦. 𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘤𝘦.

she had run through a hundred different scenarios in her head about seeing oona again—and unfortunately, not a single one included annie failing to mention that she and maple were staying at the cottage.
