SC Statewide Primary Turnout was 13.5%. We anticipated it would be lower.
Here’s why, how the % alone isn’t enough to make assumptions about turnout, and what Be The Ones is doing to solve the #SouthCarolina voter turnout problem.
A thread 🧵…
Update via the ACLU:
-Location has changed, and will now take place on the north grounds of the Statehouse (the side facing Gervais Street).
-The Women's Rights & Empowerment Network and League of Women Voters of SC clarified they are not involved or organizing the event.
Several groups expected to rally outside of Henry McMaster’s office today to oppose his anticipated announcement of a special session this afternoon.
As has been extensively reported, he has already informed members of the House and Senate he fully intends to do so.
@DemocracyDocket We’re back to fighting tomorrow as house judiciary passed bill to redraw maps and now goes to a vote to full house and senate. Also potential special session by way of governor. @marceelias@DemocracyDocket let’s chat to get the story of SC correct and uplift please.
@DemocracyDocket While SC Senate rejected resolution for special session the fight is not over. House Committee is currently debating legislation redrawing congressional districts. They’re trying to push legislation through before session ends at 5 on Thurs. This fight is far from over in SC.
@EdCSutton Black communities & communities of color are not pieces on a political chessboard. This is not a “party.” In a state with a long history of racial gerrymandering, voter dilution, & white supremacy, treating this as anything less than is deeply irresponsible, racist, & harmful.

👀 We cannot continue to turn our eyes and attention away from what is happening at the state, county and local level.
We need everyone in this battle.
Right there in your own backyard.
Wherever that may be.
We need everyone. Now.
Our partners & friends @PublicWise hosted an informative eye-opening session on Constitutional Sheriffs & Counties and shared this perfectly stated truth.
We know there’s a LOT going on. So many *things* are begging for our eyeballs and attention. But here’s the reality. 🧵
📝 Local elected officials are watching folks turn their eyes and attention to everything but them and are confident no one is noticing the harmful policy decisions they’re making that are further eroding our democracy. Your community needs you to get loud.
If we truly want to see a state house that represents us - all of us - if we truly want to champion more women in positions of power - and show others that they too can run and will be supported - let's not count them out of the ring before an election has even happened.
One of the biggest problems in SC lack of respect, giving a chance & opportunity to those that put themselves on the ballot regardless of the political math or chances of winning. so many are told - they have no shot before they even start.
@MaryCaitlinByrd This is not 100% true. 14 women are on the ballot for Senate in Nov. - 2 Rs and 12 Ds. Regardless of political math, gerrymandered maps or assumptions, let's give these women the respect & opportunity they deserve to earn votes and potentially expand gender diversity come Nov.
