Hysterical commentators claim that the United States may not interfere with South Africa’s sovereignty.

That is not what is happening here. The United States is exercising its own sovereign rights.

South Africa may decide what it wishes, but its decisions may have consequences. Sovereignty means that a country may decide for itself what is good for its citizens.

The South African government, however, is exercising its right to make decisions that are harmful to its citizens.

It is harmful to South Africans for their country to be embroiled in a political dispute with its largest trading partner.

It is harmful to have a race policy that discriminates, restricts economic growth, limits employment opportunities and creates uncertainty about property rights.

All Solidarity is asking is that the government exercise its sovereignty by making decisions in the interests of its citizens.
