What happens when Clinical leadership meets technical expertise? Today @Kenyapaeds together with @Jhpiego and SASA Alliance held a strategic meeting aligned around one goal: cutting neonatal deaths by 50% as Kenyaโs contribution to #EWENE priorities.
SASA alliance together with different stakeholders held a two day advocacy engagement with Members of Parliament on sustainable Family Planning financing.
The two-day Family Planning Financing Dialogue has ended, but the work begins now.
The resolutions were clear:
โข Secure the immediate release of the remaining KSh 270 million allocated for family planning commodities before the current financial year closes.
โข Honour the Presidential commitment of KSh 2.5 billion for family planning commodities.
โข Integrate family planning into the Social Health Authority (SHA) benefit package.
โข Classify family planning as a Strategic Health Programme to protect it from future budget cuts.
โข Strengthen county-level budgeting and accountability for family planning services.
โข Establish a parliamentary tracking mechanism to monitor commitments, allocations, releases, and implementation.
Kenya was among the first countries in Africa to embrace family planning. We should not be lagging behind our neighbours when it comes to financing it.
This is not about controlling population. It is about empowering families, protecting women, reducing maternal deaths, improving economic outcomes, and ensuring that every pregnancy is planned, wanted, and safe.
The time for discussion is over.
The time for action is now.

Today, I joined fellow legislators, health experts, development partners, and advocates at the Parliamentary Briefing on Family Planning Financing.
Kenya was among the pioneers of reproductive health initiatives in our region. However, todayโs briefing reminded us that implementation matters more than innovation. Resources allocated for reproductive health must reach the women and families they are intended to serve.
Ethiopia and Uganda have demonstrated the value of ring-fenced budgets and accountability, proving that progress happens when Parliament moves beyond budget approvals and actively exercises oversight.
As we work toward achieving Kenyaโs FP2030 commitments, let us learn from our neighbours that leadership is not about being first, but about finishing what you started.

One of the most insightful presentations yesterday came from Federico Tobar, UNFPA Health Economist Adviser, who challenged us to look beyond family planning as a health intervention and see it as a catalyst for economic transformation.
Drawing lessons from the Asian Tigers, Federico explained that countries achieve rapid and sustainable growth when they successfully harness the demographic dividend through three interconnected investments:
1. A fertility transition.
2. Investment in human capital.
3. Creation of productive employment.
His message was both simple and profound: family planning is not merely about preventing unintended pregnancies. It is about expanding freedom, keeping girls in school, increasing womenโs participation in the economy, strengthening families, and unlocking a countryโs human potential.
One statement particularly resonated with me: โKenyaโs greatest resource is its people.โ
By investing in voluntary family planning, education, and opportunity, we are investing in that resource and laying the foundation for long-term economic growth and shared prosperity.
As our conversations continue today, I look forward to exploring how Kenya can translate these insights into practical policies, sustainable financing, and stronger outcomes for women, families, and future generations.

One of the most concerning presentations at todayโs Family Planning Financing Briefing came from KEMSA. Of the 12 family planning commodities monitored, 9 are below the recommended minimum stock levels, with several facing stock-out risks.
Behind every stock-out statistic is a woman, a family, or a young person who may be unable to access essential reproductive health services. We must strengthen accountability across the supply chain to ensure essential commodities reach the women and families who need them.

Titles, Positions, and the Illusion of Power
Many people in corporate and public offices confuse the power of the institution with their own personal brand. When I used to be introduced as โWillis Raburu, Citizen TV,โ the dominant brand was not Willis Raburu.
It was Citizen TV. The platform amplified the individual, not the other way around. My boss, Wachira Waruru, or "coach," as we call him, always told me one thing that has stuck with me over the years and that I tell upcoming journalists and media personalities. He said, "Never take for granted the platform you have and the opportunity to come on TV daily in front of millions and say your name!" This distinction matters.
Too many office holders, executives, and senior managers mistake access for authority, perks for permanence, and proximity to power for personal relevance. They don't realize that once the name of the organization is taken off your title, you cease to exist. Very few people build a name beyond the brand . Dr. James Mwangi, Bob Collymore , Michael Joseph, Jeff Koinange are a few notable names that have built their names into brands. This is important because we have our work and our purpose.
So here is the uncomfortable but necessary question:
If the organization fired you today, would you still be able to afford your life?
The respect? The influence? The seat at the table?
If the answer is no, then the brand youโve been living off is not yours.
The real work: building a name beyond the institution. So that when we say we take the institution's name away, you're still standing for something.
Strategic communication at a personal level requires the same discipline as institutional communication: What do you stand for outside your job title?
What value do you carry that is transferable? What reputation follows you when the letterhead disappears? Are people loyal to you or to the office you temporarily occupy?
History is clear on this: Institutions outlive individuals. Titles expire. Offices rotate. Only personal credibility, skill, ethics, and independent relevance endure. So don't think that you are using your space and title to make someone's life miserable; you are replaceable. Just work so that after you get the axe, or move on. Your name still stands for something.
The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA), in partnership with Health NGOs Networks (HENNET) and JHPIEGO Kenya, held a high-level sensitisation on reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and nutrition (RMNCAH+N) to deliberate on urgent legislative and policy actions aimed at improving health outcomes for women, children, and adolescents. These proposed legislative measures are intended to help reduce maternal and child deaths in Kenya.
