The ritual of treating the Supreme Court as though it were a hub reserved for lawyers with Methuselah-like years of practice is backward.

Although experience does matter in law, it is possible for a young lawyer with enough preparation to be able to advocate effectively before the Supreme Court.

There should come a time in our national life where we stop worshiping things merely because they are old. We must understand that the world is rapidly evolving, and people can learn through avenues beyond mechanical apprenticeship.

It depends on your aspiration. If you are seeking to venture into academia later in life you can go for academic (general) LL.M, but should you be aspiring to break into a sector, say Energy or Finance for instance, you can go for the latter.

Firstly getting called to the NY Bar is a multistep process and extremely financially tasking even for US lawyers.
Secondly, this exam isn’t written online and unless you already have a visa you can’t write it.
Thirdly, it doesn’t increase your employability in Nigeria or the US.

The International Bar Association (IBA) hosts its next annual general conference in Copenhagen (Denmark) come October 2026.

Not every Master’s degree is an upgrade.

A Master’s degree should do at least one of these:
• deepen expertise
• open new career pathways
• strengthen professional credibility

If it does none, it becomes an expensive certificate.

So many advice you’ll see here will not be practicable for you.
Personally I was changing strategy every week for the first 7 weeks and it was not up until after the first externship I actually found it

One mistake we all make when choosing schools for graduate studies is to overly focus on the global ranking or reputation of the school over the more important thing: the school’s strength in the subject area you want to study.

If you are applying for a Master of Laws degree, choose your school based on course strength.
Some schools are generally good in every area, but others are not.

It may be better to do Tax law at NYU than at Yale.
So also, it may be better to do legal theory at UChicago than at UPenn.

Focus on the course area too.

I understand some people think studying law is very limiting, but that’s only true if you believe a law degree is only useful for becoming a barrister or a solicitor. There’s so much you can do with a law degree. Private practice isn’t for everyone. Law is only limiting if you haven’t opened your mind to the billion and one things you can do with your skills and training as a lawyer.

senior, thanks for bringing this conversation up again. the problem is bigger than GBA.

every year i get people reaching out for pupilage referrals etc. so i did a lot of digging to understand the problem

- majority of the law firms do not have online application systems or working websites to advertise these vacancies. if they did, i would have built an open-source platform to scrape available slots for new lawyers to jump there every day for vancancies.

- we have a long way to go but we will get there for GBA to build a public api for us to access some of their data to help educate new lawyers on law firms in our market.
