The most challenging call yet is to “Love your enemies”
“When we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure; 13 when we are slandered, we encourage. We have become like the refuse of the world, the offscouring of all things, until now.”
1 Corinthians 4:12–13
“My little children, I am writing these things to you in order that you may not sin.
…
And if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one,”
1 John 2:1
1 John 2:12
The Toddler and the Door
As I communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ to others I always challenge myself to find a new way of explaining it.
I recently used this analogy with my children:
The way to heaven is like this. Jesus Christ said that he is the the way the truth and the life. That no man comes to the Father, but by Him.
Imagine a child coming to a door and wanting through to the other side.
They are too short to reach the handle, and too weak to turn it if they could.
They need Jesus to open that door.
They may love the help, or refuse it (Ever see a toddler demand that they be allowed to do something themselves?)
Regardless of how good or bad they’ve been, they need Jesus to open the door.
Oh. One more thing, the toddler is sick, just threw a fit, and has a poopy diaper.
Jesus needs to clean them up completely before He can allow them through the door into the heavenly room on the other side.
Jesus is willing to let all through the door.
But, it’s on His terms, and that is great news.
May the Lord receive @ScottAdamsSays
“Therefore, I urge first of all that petitions, prayers, requests, and thanksgiving be made on behalf of all people, on behalf of kings and all those who are in authority, in order that we may live a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.
This is good and acceptable before God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”
(1 Timothy 2:1–4)
Then Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God?
As for you, you planned evil against me, but God planned it for good, in order to do this—to keep many people alive—as it is today.
Genesis 50:19–20
To know wisdom and instruction,
to understand sayings of understanding,
to gain ⌊insightful instruction⌋,
righteousness and justice and equity,
to give shrewdness to the simple,
knowledge and purpose to the young,
may the wise hear and increase learning,
and the one who understands gain direction,
to understand a proverb and an expression,
words of wisdom and their riddles.
Fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge;
wisdom and instruction, fools despise.
(Proverbs 1:2–7, LEB)
Say to them,
‘As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?’
it doesn’t matter who the wicked are in this passage. For only God knows who are truly wicked in his eyes.
But if All Knowing God takes no pleasure at the death of the wicked, then how much more cautious should we be in the death of our fellow man (friend or foe)?
Still the most radical and transcendent command:
“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. “
Luke 6:27–28
Do not gloat when your enemy falls;
when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice,
or the Lord will see and disapprove
and turn his wrath away from them.
Proverbs 24:28
And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.”
Now some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts,
“Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming! Who is able to forgive sins except God alone?”
Mark 2:5–7
The Kingdom of Heaven is like a King that sent His only begotten Son to give His life as a ransom for many.
And those who accepted His gift became co-heirs with their Redeemer.
For grief according to the will of God brings about a repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted, but worldly grief brings about death.
2 Corinthians 7:10
Matthew 9:13 — Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”
