Someone once told me being a lawyer is like being a surgeon except there is another surgeon in the room trying to kill your patient while you are trying to save them. After tough moments with opposing counsel I think about that quote and laugh.

Today I watched a judge get upset b/c an attorney said during a bail application that the family had not been able to save enough money to buy their loved one’s freedom. She didn’t like that characterization of bail. Which leads me to ask, what do judges think bail is?
@KristineHadeed Written right into the 13th amendment and adopted in many state constitutions, this exception clause is one very real way modern day slavery exists and our racialized economy continues to exploit its laborers.
Also amplifying that voters in 5 states (Alabama, Louisiana, Oregon, Tennessee and Vermont) have a chance to abolish penal slavery in their constitution this November.
Colorado was the first to do so.
We can end slavery at the local level.
