Monday starts Wk 9 of an exceptional 53rd summer. Here’s a look back at an epic Hoplite Challenge Cup, SLI visit to the ANS, and Ovid sight w/ RMF. How exceptional? RMF has been so impressed she ASKED to teach more than her usual 3 visits! Full details in the next newsletter.
εἰς ὄνυχα πάντα. As we enter Week 5, a look back at what’s been a very full, very energetic summer. For both programs, the reading intensive, 2nd half beckons: this Friday, SLI students have their grammar exam, while the Greeks, with 2 wks left, hold a Challenge Cup scrimmage.
This year’s 1st Friday Social was especially meaningful, as it segued into a memorial for our late founder, Floyd L. Moreland. The recollections were moving, but FLM's true legacy is the record # of students at the LGI this summer. In perpetuum, paterfamilias, ave atque vale...
Scenes from Day One of the 53rd summer of the Latin/Greek Institute. We welcomed one of the largest classes in decades: 27 students in Basic Latin and 40 in Ancient Greek. There's no place we'd rather be!
Day 1 of the 53rd summer of the LGI is 2 weeks away, with one of the largest cohorts in decades. Please join us on Friday 6/12 at the Grad Center for an early dinner to celebrate the life and legacy of our founder, Floyd Moreland. RSVP: LRubin [AT] https://t.co/v8ixWQss19.
The 53rd Latin/Greek Institute is a mere 7 weeks away! Following the first Friday social (6/12), we will celebrate the life of our late founder, Floyd Moreland. Please join us for a festive dinner and reminiscence, as the creator would have wanted. RSVP: [email protected]
The Spring 2026 LGI Newsletter is out. This 32-page double issue pays tribute to Floyd Moreland and, in the festive spirit in which he envisioned the Institute, is also packed with a comprehensive review of the summer 2025, historical trivia, and – of course – Rita’s Digest!
There’s nothing like a summer of study at the LGI: you give us 50 days, we’ll give you the gift of Latin or Greek. Applications close soon. Scholarships available.
Alums! Do you still have your LGI t-shirt? The forthcoming newsletter includes a feature on t-shirts, and we’d love to include a picture of yours (or you in it)! We’re especially interested in those from the 1980s-early 00s. If so, please send our way: [email protected]
The LGI’s Lar and Herm are aglow this morning: yesterday’s Giving Tuesday campaign raised $32,326, which was 162% of our $20,000 goal! There’s nothing like the LGI, and nothing like its amazing alums. From all of us - Rita, Hardy, and the faculty and staff - THANK YOU!
Although the LGI's legendary rigor and standards remain unchanged since 1973, the cost of running the Institute has not. This Giving Tuesday, please help ensure the LGI remains a vital resource in the decades to come. A gift of any size goes a long way: https://t.co/wqK4BcBrm6
Greetings! We'll be posting some 2026 summer information shortly. For now, we wanted to share that - at long last - we've joined Instagram: @cuny_lgi. If you're a user, please follow us there as well!
This past Friday's 46th Hoplite Challenge Cup pit 16 ὁπλῖται against a team of seven διδάσκαλοι. In a 16-round slugfest, with many duels going the full distance, some unorthodox moves, and despite HH going 3-0, the students captured the 2025 cup, 10-6.
Week 5 ended yesterday. In the SLI, students took their final grammar exam. 23 days ago, they learned pronunciation and now they’re translating Caesar. Meanwhile, Greek students held a practice for next week’s Hoplite Challenge Cup. There’s really nothing quite like the LGI.
As always, the first week of the LGI concludes with a mixer, which allows students and faculty across the programs to mix and mingle. It’s an important and celebratory milestone, not least as students now know what we mean by “the Institute cannot be described, only experienced.”
The 52nd summer of the Latin/Greek Institute began today, with more than 70 students joining us for the basic programs, and an online section of upper Latin starting in two weeks. There’s really no other place we’d rather be!
