엄마가 수술실에 들어간 지 20분 만에.

팀장이 전화해 이렇게 말했습니다.

“보호자가 있다고 수술 결과가 달라지는 것도 아니잖아요.”

그리고 다음 날.

회사는 저에게 권고사직서를 내밀었습니다.

회사에 다닌 지 4년째였습니다.

아파도 급한 일은 집에서 처리했고.

야근과 주말 연락도 거의 거절하지 않았습니다.

연차는 매년 절반 이상 남았습니다.

그러다 엄마가 종양 제거 수술을 받게 됐습니다.

아빠는 몇 년 전 돌아가셨고.

가까이 사는 가족은 저뿐이었습니다.

저는 수술 3주 전 연차를 신청했습니다.

팀장에게 사정도 설명했고.

결재까지 받았습니다.

업무자료와 비상 연락처도 모두 정리해뒀습니다.

수술 당일 아침.

엄마가 수술실에 들어간 지 20분쯤 지났을 때 팀장에게 전화가 왔습니다.

“대신 미팅에 들어갈 직원이 준비가 안 됐대요.”

“지금 회사로 올 수 있어요?”

병원이라 어렵다고 말했습니다.

수술은 예상보다 길어졌습니다.

몇 시간을 기다린 뒤.

엄마가 회복실에서 처음 한 말은 제 걱정이었습니다.

“회사 괜찮아?”

“나 때문에 일 망친 거 아니야?”

저는 아무 일도 없다며 웃었습니다.

하지만 다음 날 면담실에는.

팀장과 인사 담당자가 기다리고 있었습니다.

회사는 업무 능력이 아니라.

제 ‘근무 안정성’이 걱정된다고 했습니다.

“가족 문제로 중요한 순간에 자리를 비우는 직원에게.”

저는 짧게 답했습니다.

“추가 업무 지원은 어렵습니다.”

그리고 더는 답하지 않았습니다.

저는 그날 회사로 가지 않은 것을.

한 번도 후회한 적이 없습니다.

회사는 언제든 다른 직원을 채용할 수 있습니다.
