The only reason to jump aboard is for the other people who have jumped aboard. But no one need have jumped aboard.

If enough people jump into the boat, they can plug the hole to stop it from sinking, if not enough people get on board, those who jumped aboard will drown. If everyone just stays on the jetty, no one drowns.
