Took a usual departure from my usual politics coverage to write w/ my colleague Graham Womack about Sacramento writer William Vollmann, who’s dying of terminal cancer, has a book out this month and is giving his first public reading Saturday https://t.co/bt379cbAeJ
News: Rest of World, the nonprofit newsroom focused on the impact of technology outside the West founded by Sophie Schmidt, tells donors in an email it will “cease publishing as a standalone entity” at the end of January.

Stoked to announce that Wright Thompson and I are teaching a class at @mujschool this spring, an intensive magazine writing workshop for a select number of students. We’ll study and/or speak to some of the greatest-evers, from Tom Junod to Michael Lewis and JR Moehringer to Gay Talese and Taffy Brodesser-Akner and a lot more — as much ego as a Zoom can handle. Applications are due Friday to John Anderson and Mark Horvit.
This account will be posting every day in support and defense of four pillars: 1) doing me unapologetically, 2) having fun, 3) sex positivity, and 4) hyping up my friends.
Rep Andy Harris defends his viral exchange where he threatened to have a student journalist arrested at a press conference for taking video of him. Fox45 not having it.
I want to be clear: I would have preferred not to make this video. I am sharing it to explain my upcoming coverage of the race for California state controller, including my efforts to interview incumbent Malia Cohen (D-CA) and why my candidate interview coverage of this office will feature only her challenger, Herb Morgan (R-CA).
I would have preferred to produce a piece giving both candidates equal time. Those are journalistic values that guide me every day. After weeks of outreach and back-and-forth with Cohen’s team, a Zoom interview was scheduled, then abruptly canceled by her team. I was told she had no availability to reschedule before the election.
Her team said I could submit written questions for Cohen to answer in writing. I respectfully declined because I wanted voters to hear directly from her on camera, with the opportunity for follow-up questions.
I told her team multiple times I wanted to ensure voters heard her side, her priorities, and answer why she deserves a second term in office. I made every effort to make that happen.
Fairness is always my priority. My goal was to give both candidates the same opportunity to discuss their records, answer meaningful and tough questions, and speak directly to voters. I regret that I could not make that happen, but voters deserve transparency about the process.
Good story by @JeanneKuang about Gavin Newsom's taxpayer-funded comms shop that never stops posting: “The 2028 POTUS race starts Jan. 1, 2027,” Dem pollster Celina Lake said. “He’s set up the infrastructure to keep it going.” https://t.co/lONkBkhdlT
