A zucchini stopped a house from being built in Berkeley.

In 2017, a resident held up a zucchini at a town council meeting and claimed her neighbor’s proposed house would cast “shadow pollution” on her garden. The council took the objection seriously.

This is what 60 years of democratic socialism looks like when applied to private property. Neighbors get to vote on what you can do with yours.

The power came from three books published in the 1960s:

(1) Jane Jacobs taught neighborhood groups to organize against city demolition projects, and cities later let those same groups vote on new construction.

(2) Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring politicized the environmental movement, and in 1970 Ronald Reagan signed CEQA so a single lawsuit or objection can stop almost any housing project.

(3) Paul Ehrlich’s Population Bomb convinced California progressives that blocking local housing would fight global overpopulation, and Marin County used water permits to enforce a construction ban for years.

Private property rights got outsourced to whichever neighbors show up and object.

Berkeley’s median home is now around $1.5 million.

San Francisco’s is over $2 million.

California handed the veto to the loudest objectors and then acted shocked when the middle class got priced out of the state.
