TINUBU’S FAILURE TO OFFICIALLY HAND OVER POWER AFTER 21 DAYS: NATIONAL ASSEMBLY MUST ACT TO REMOVE HIM NOW UNDER SECTION 145 OF THE NIGERIAN CONSTITUTION

The National Assembly must immediately commence the constitutional process prescribed by Section 145(2) of the 1999 Constitution to mandate Vice-President Kashim Shettima to perform the functions of President as Acting President.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT left Nigeria on August 30, 2026, for a three-week vacation. That 21-day period has expired. Instead of returning, as announced, the Presidency stated on September 21 that Tinubu had extended his vacation abroad by “a few days.”

Section 145 is unambiguous. Whenever the President proceeds on vacation, he shall transmit a written declaration to the Senate President and Speaker of the House, enabling the Vice-President to perform presidential functions as Acting President. Where the President fails or is unable to transmit that declaration within 21 days, Section 145(2) says the National Assembly shall, by simple majority in each House, mandate the Vice-President to perform those functions.

As of today, no Section 145 declaration transferring presidential functions to Vice-President @KashimSM has been publicly established.

The Presidency cannot invent a “working vacation” exception that does not appear in the Constitution. Its claim that Tinubu continues to “direct the affairs of the nation” from abroad does not answer the constitutional question. Indeed, the Presidency's own statement says Tinubu remains on vacation while merely “delegating” Shettima to represent him at certain functions.

Nigeria can't be governed by press releases, telephone calls, or constitutional improvisation.

Senate President @SenGodswill Akpabio and Speaker @ngrspeakerabbas must immediately tell Nigerians whether they received the declaration required by Section 145(1). If they did not, the 21-day threshold has passed, and the National Assembly must begin the process prescribed by Section 145(2) to mandate Vice-President Kashim Shettima to perform the functions of President as Acting President.

This is no longer about Tinubu's vacation. It is about whether Nigeria will be governed according to its Constitution.

The 21 days have expired. The National Assembly must act now.

NIGERIA MUST NOT MISS THE 4TH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

The world has undergone four distinct industrial revolutions that have transformed economies, societies, and the way human beings live and work. The First Industrial Revolution introduced mechanization powered by water and steam. The Second ushered in mass production driven by electricity. The Third brought automation through digital technology. Today, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is redefining the future through artificial intelligence, robotics, blockchain, biotechnology, quantum computing, and cyber-physical systems.

Nigeria missed the opportunities presented by the first three industrial revolutions, largely due to decades of poor leadership, poor governance, and a failure to invest in innovation, education, and technological development. As a result, our nation has remained largely dependent on consuming technologies developed elsewhere instead of creating them.

We cannot afford to repeat that mistake. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is the greatest technological transformation in human history, and Nigeria must seize this opportunity to leap forward rather than fall further behind. Achieving this requires replacing incompetence, corruption, and recycled politics with visionary leadership that prioritizes science, technology, innovation, and human capital development.

Nigeria cannot afford to miss this revolution. Our future depends on embracing it.
