The moral case for capitalism is that your life belongs to you. Your work, your savings and your plans don’t become somebody else’s property because they have a moving speech about how they’d use them.
The wealthiest Americans pay almost all taxes as is. The problem is not and has never been that they don't pay enough, it's that the government spends way, way, way, too much. The fix is not even higher taxes, it's basic sanity around spending.
The idea that poverty is man-made rather than the default starting point is one the dumbest and most dangerous misconceptions in economics, politics and life.
Mary Peltola showed up to the debate with notecards full of answers for question after question. Moderators said nobody got the questions ahead of time. Her response was that she was “prepared.” Prepared to read that is.
She looked down at those cards over and over. Bullet points. Awkward pauses. Even needed them talking about Alaska’s fishing industry. The same industry she never wrote a single bill for in Congress. But she couldn’t speak on it without notes.
If they did not hand out the questions, then either she somehow knew every topic coming and had every answer written out, or she spent the whole night reading talking points her people wrote for her because she cannot talk about this state without a script in her hand.
Alaskans do not need a senator who has to check her notes every time the subject changes. They need someone who already knows the issues. Fuel prices. Fish. LNG. What is actually happening here.
Sullivan called it on stage and again after. You cannot cue-card your way through the Senate. Everyone saw the cards. That is the clip. That is the problem.
What’s terrifying about this clip isn’t their ideals…these sweet gals’ hearts are certainly in the right place. What’s terrifying is they have the civic, political, and economic literacy of a 9 year old. When a charlatan like Abdul comes along with the Jr High class president schtick of “no more homework and the vending machines are all free!”, they fall for it.
I don’t know how you get to that age with ZERO understanding of supply chains, manufacturing, labor costs…but a lot of folks think that medicine and MRIs and hospitals just materialize out of thin air like unicorn farts. They’ve never built anything in their lives, so they have no concept of how things function…things are just…there. They think milk comes from the store. They think rich people don’t pay taxes, even though the top 1% fund 40% of government with their taxes already, and yet 40% of all Americans contribute ZERO federal income tax at all. These people don’t understand that you could tax the wealthy at 100% and it would only fund the government for 120 days. Then you’re screwed.
Too many Americans simply have zero understanding of how anything works, and even though they’re living in the easiest times in human history, they think things are “terrible out there”. These commie scammers roll through and promise them things that sound great, but aren’t possible in reality, and have devastating consequences if tried…but because they don’t know anything, they fall for it. Sadly, so many of our politicians and their advisors are such atrocious communicators, there’s like zero countervailing narrative to push back on the commie gobbledygook, so we are gonna have to learn the hard way. Guys…we just had a sample of socialism: Covid. We all got universal basic income, and it ended up tripling our costs and they’ll never go down. Ever. That one brief little experiment in command and control government will haunt us the rest of our lives. Bleak stuff, man.
I've stayed far away from the radioactive Cornell discourse, but I do want to make one meta-observation.
I spend a lot of time in different corners of the internet, and the two 'sides' of the Cornell story are living in separate universes. Entirely different facts, wildly separate narratives. Spend time in different social media spaces and it's like they're describing two totally distinct incidents.
There's almost no shared reality whatsoever, and that strikes me as really dangerous.
Progressives are stuck on a grievance hamster wheel. It's the same cycle, over and over again. Nothing ever moves forward, nothing changes, nothing is resolved. The purpose is just to be mad. And virtue signal about it. Not to change anything, not to better understand, not to seek deeper truths https://t.co/80qXVWv2xq
