Apprenticeships. I love them. We’ve developed hundreds and hundreds through our companies, giving youngsters the skills they need to build a rewarding and sustainable career.
We’ve sold an entire generation a foul lie, that if you don’t go to university, you’ve somehow failed - it is total bloody guff.
For most young people, university has become a route to nowhere. You leave home, rack up £50,000 of debt, and get handed a degree that means very little in the real world. Then you move back in with your parents and start applying for the same jobs you could’ve done at 18.
Yes, you’ve got pissed in some small city for three years. You can do that whilst training to be a plumber too, just without the debt and the pointless coursework.
If you’re not sure what you want to do with your life, do NOT go to university. Learn a skill.
The country doesn’t need more graduates. It needs electricians, builders, plumbers and the rest. Of course for some, university is the right path, but that does not reflect the sheer volume of students currently going to university. We need drastically fewer universities, and drastically fewer university students.
We’ve built a system that’s forgotten how to make or fix anything. For most, higher education is just to delay starting adult life. It’s good for universities, good for administrators - not so good for the kids paying the bill for the rest of their lives.
The debt is eye-watering. Most will never pay it off, and only shave down the interest payment every month.
It’s just another tax, one which will eat into your earnings forever. Entirely unnecessary. To what, pay for a few nights out in your early 20s? Is that worth a lifetime of debt? I think not.
Apprenticeships build confidence, discipline and real-world ability. You learn a trade, earn while you learn, and by your early twenties you’re already years ahead of your peers at university.
No debt. Just skills, which will last you forever. Work for someone for a while, develop your skills, then look to start your own business. If you dedicate yourself, the demand will always be there. AI won't replace you, not for several decades at least...
Work on your time. Run your own business. Be your own boss.
Make something. Build something. Do something.
If that sounds appealing, have a serious think about an apprenticeship. I would argue we need to be giving kids the opportunity to learn and develop trades even earlier in school. Why not? Let’s make it as easy as possible for boys and girls not so good with the textbooks to build their skills through a different avenue.
Britain should be proud to make, fix and build again. That means valuing tradesmen and women every bit as much as graduates, more I would argue.
Let’s start building an economy that actually does something.
My advice to youngsters reading this? Apprenticeships.
Consider it.
There is plenty wrong with Britain. Plenty. Far too much. We mustn’t shy away from that, but we also mustn’t talk our country down.
Great potential, great ability, great people - the very best people.
It’s a genuine honour to represent Great Yarmouth, England and Britain in our Parliament. The mother of Parliaments.
I have the most severe doubts about those governing the country, I certainly don’t have doubts about those they’re governing.
We hear so very much about what’s wrong with Britain, it’s important not to forget there’s so much right with it too. It might not win too many votes or generate vast social media engagement, but there is absolutely a positive story to tell about Britain and the British people.
We’ve given more to the free world than anyone else. We can do so again. Constant doomism, from politicians on the left and right, does not serve us, at all.
When it’s working well, Britain is the most fantastic country in the world. We can get back there, of that I’m sure.
We just need to get this absurd British state out of lives, and as far away from our day-to-day activity as possible.
Protect our borders, our people, our interests.
Simplify life. Encourage entrepreneurialism. Empower the individual. Embrace innovation. Strengthen the family. Cut back the state. Leave us alone.
We can be so much better. Britain can be so much better. The ingredients are all there. It’s not that far away, it just requires a little national courage.
But most importantly? Always remember, there is much to fight for. A better Britain. We’ve done it before, we will do it again.
Farmers should not have to pay inheritance tax, family businesses should not have to pay inheritance tax.
I don't think anyone should have to pay inheritance tax - it's stealing already taxed money from the dead.
Abolish inheritance tax, for everybody.
Risk is good, risk is what drives the economy.
Every company ever built, every breakthrough in any technology - all of it began with someone taking a risk.
If we want real growth, we need to reward those who give it a go - tax them less, and get out of their way.
Simple.
Very few people realize that Europe’s entire electricity needs can be met with solar panels covering an area less than the size of the island of Sicily!
Battery packs can cover the energy needed during the night.
Amidst the massive power outage in Spain and Portugal, we’re seeing the latest flavor of FUD around solar and wind power, with (of course) claims that we will need gas turbines for decades to come. Nonsense. The solution is batteries. That is why @tonyseba and our team at @rethink_x have been writing about SWB and not just SW for over a decade.
Traditional grids rely on inertial or “spinning” mass - literally the huge turbines spinning in coal, gas, nuclear, and hydro power stations - to aid with grid balancing ancillary services (voltage control, frequency control, and cold-start / black-start). Battery energy storage systems can provide all of these same services. And better. And cheaper. The power electronics components of battery energy storage systems (not just the battery cells, but also inverters, ultracapacitors, etc.) can together provide “synthetic inertia”. BESS can even be paired with synchronous condensers to provide literal spinning inertia, if need be.
Don’t be misled by the latest fossil FUD. Spain and Portugal *have* gas turbines providing old-fashioned inertia. It wasn’t enough. If instead they had already built and properly deployed sufficient battery energy storage, these load shocks they experienced would have been manageable instead of causing a disaster.
I am so passionate about apprenticeships - my companies have developed hundreds and hundreds. Giving young men and women the chance to earn as they learn, avoiding a mountain of debt.
Real skills. Required skills.
We don't need gender studies graduates, we need electricians.
Happy Mother’s Day. As a country, we owe it to every mother, and potential mother, to make Britain a safe, pleasant, and affordable place to raise a family.
We should be helping British people to start families, not making them fear they can’t afford one.
I’ve been married for decades, with four children - it was easily the best decision we ever made. It is tragically sad that others feel unable to follow that path. Not through choice, but because of circumstances beyond their control.
The state of the country should never be a barrier to motherhood.
We have an awfully long way to go.
AI revolutionizes weather forecasting 🌡️☀️☁️ https://t.co/3DWhDwzeg4
📍Cambridge scientists have made a major breakthrough in weather forecasting after developing a new AI prediction model that is tens of times better than current systems.
Over the next 15-20 years, artificial intelligence (in various forms) will disrupt and revolutionize human labor across every major industry and sector of the global economy.
Silencing critics doesn’t stop failure, it just guarantees nobody warns you about it.
I’ve run big businesses. I hire people who are smarter than me, more capable than me, and know more than me. I trust them. I welcome criticism and robust debate - that’s why I pay them!
I know what I don’t know. In fact, I know that I don’t know an awful lot. But I find people who do know, and trust them to deliver. That’s how organisations succeed.
It’s the only way organisations succeed.
A good leader doesn’t create followers, they create more leaders.
Apple has caved to Labour overreach, stripping Brits of vital encryption protections that are available in the US and EU.
If Government has access to your iCloud data, then so too do bad actors.
This is going to cause CHAOS, with YOUR data.
Labour needs to urgently rethink.
Encryption matters. I want my data to be private, ESPECIALLY from the state.
Lots of questions. Why? Why now? Why does the state need this? Apple rolled over. I want to know why?
Do we trust the state with our newly unencrypted data? The answer is NO WAY.
Leave our data alone.
Most modern EV’s have a system called Regen braking. When you lift your foot off the accelerator, the electric motor reverses its function and become an electrical generator. Not only does this facilitate breaking, it also facilitates regeneration of the battery power pack. Thus creating efficiencies and more range.
Also, when you add in energy storage, via large battery packs, you can get many other additional benefits with enhanced grid/power management:
1. **Scalable Energy Storage**:
- Systems designed for utility-scale energy storage, capable of scaling up to hundreds of megawatt-hours. This scalability makes it ideal for large projects that require significant energy storage capacity to stabilize the grid or store renewable energy.
2. **Integration with Renewable Energy**:
- They can store energy from renewable sources like solar and wind, providing a consistent power supply even when these sources are not actively producing electricity (e.g., at night for solar or during calm periods for wind).
3. **Grid Stability and Reliability**:
- By storing energy during off-peak times and releasing it during peak demand, they help in load leveling, reducing strain on the grid, and can prevent or mitigate blackouts. They also respond quickly to changes in grid conditions, enhancing overall grid stability.
4. **Reduced Need for Peaker Plants**:
- With energy storage solutions there's less reliance on peaker plants (usually fossil fuel-based), which are used during times of high demand. This can lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
5. **Cost Savings**:
- Over time, the use of battery energy storage can lead to financial savings for utilities by optimizing energy use, reducing the need for expensive infrastructure upgrades, and potentially lowering maintenance costs compared to traditional power plants.
6. **Rapid Deployment**:
- Battery energy storage can be deployed much quicker than building new power plants, which can take years. The modular designs allows for faster installation and integration into existing systems.
7. **Space Efficiency**:
- Battery energy storage has a high energy density, meaning it can store a lot of energy in a relatively small footprint compared to other traditional energy storage methods like pumped hydro.
8. **Environmental Benefits**:
- By facilitating greater use of renewable energy and reducing the need for fossil fuel-based peaker plants, the battery energy storage contributes to lower carbon emissions.
9. **Emergency Power Supply**:
- In case of grid failures due to natural disasters or other emergencies, battery energy storage can provide backup power to critical infrastructure, enhancing resilience.
