What Does It Mean to Be Human? To ask what it means to be human is to assume a kind of purity, a sense of separateness that defines “us” against all else. Yet, only 43% of the cells in our body are human; the remaining 57% belong to microbes—bacteria, viruses, fungi, and archaea that coexist within us. This begs the question: if most of “us” isn’t even human, what makes us who we are?

Perhaps being human is not about cellular composition but about the stories we tell. Our bodies are ecosystems. And these microbes are not invaders; they are partners for our very survival. To be human, then, is to be a community.

And what of our genes? Microbial genes outnumber human genes by a ratio of 100:1, meaning the genetic blueprint of “us” is largely microbial. Yet, we cling to the illusion of autonomy.

Shin Young-Bok writes, “Here, in the heart of this winter, I reflect on what I must cut away, what I must forget, and what I must hold on to.” Like the sharp cold of winter that cuts away the old, cells die and are replaced, ecosystems shift, and our stories evolve as we learn and grow. Renewal is not an event but a continuous process, shaping who we are and who we can become. “Leading and taking care of that system is the way to love yourself.”

What does it mean to be human? Perhaps it is about letting go of the myth of separateness and embracing the truth of coexistence. Like the changing seasons, we are shaped by cycles of growth, decay, and renewal. We are not just individuals; we are ecosystems, a multitude of stories and systems coming together. And maybe that is humanity’s most profound truth.

I felt heavily inspired by the lineage of Hip Hop and how it contributes to who I am today.
