What bothers me about RE9 ship wars is that no one ever considers game design.

When RE9 first released, the kneejerk reaction to Leon being married was: "So where's his wife? Why isn't she helping him?"

And no one seems to realize that this question is going to keep coming up.

If you would, put your own personal shipping biases aside for a second. Imagine that the story DLC for RE9 reveals that Leon is married to one of the main RE ladies. Doesn't matter who. Claire, Ada, Jill, or even Rebecca. Don't think about how plausible any of them are. That's not the point. Just imagine that it's true for a minute, okay?

Will any of those girls be able to star in their own game ever again without the fandom going, "So where the fuck is her husband? Is the Super Soldier Mega Hero Leon S. Kennedy just ~too busy~ to support his own wife in a life-or-death situation? He can't be bothered?"

Even if it's directly addressed in dialogue -- even if the game gives a very good reason for his absence -- do you really think that people will accept that?

How many people are going to start crying that he's a shitty husband? How long before that discourse spirals off into "he's abusive"?

How misogynistic is that discourse going to get? How many dudes are going to be shitting on Claire/Ada/Jill/Rebecca's game, demanding to know where Leon is, because "it's a husband's duty to protect"?

Or, worse: "wtf why is she in a game, why hasn't Leon knocked her up yet, she should be at home raising her kids"?

Do you think Capcom wants that for their female leads?

Think about how bad and annoying the "WHERE'S ADA?" "WHERE'S CLAIRE?" "WHERE'S JILL?" discourse in the fandom is right now. Think about how much worse it would get if it was revealed that Leon was married to one of them... and then Capcom dared to release another game with him on his own again.

It's so unbelievably restrictive from a game design perspective. It pigeonholes the characters and limits the amount of scenarios they can feasibly appear in. It also limits the cast composition of any particular game.

It'll become the elephant in the room that needs to be addressed in every. Single. Fucking. Title. With either of the two characters. Ever. Released. Ever. Again.

Capcom seems content to keep the RE series alive and well until the world ends in a nuclear holocaust. Nakanishi said recently that no one in the company thinks that the characters are getting "too old" -- that they could bring Leon back well into his 70s, and he'd still be a compelling character.

Do you really think they're going to shackle him to another lead? Or shackle another lead to him?

Because I don't.

@Sapphire1Weapon In my opinion, speaking seriously, the whole marriage plotline completely ruined Leon. It created massive plot holes for subsequent installments and messed up all of Leon’s interpersonal dynamics.

To piggyback off of this thought: I also think that people who are advocating for Leon to end up with a random no-name character are also failing to take into consideration game design, just in a different way.

Modern RE games take a very specific approach to their storytelling. Heavy lore stuff gets shoved into files and memos. Characterization happens through action and dialogue, and it's amplified by symbolic imagery attached to the characters' designs.

Relationships, however, only develop on the screen. The audience isn't meant to guess at what the relationship is between two characters; we're meant to watch it play out. That's why Capcom never bothers to explain how most of the main leads met each other -- because it doesn't actually matter what the lore is behind their meeting; what matters is how the dynamics of their relationship affect the events happening in the story and also the characters themselves.

For Leon's wife to be both absent from the on-screen events of RE9 and also be a nobody who doesn't affect the story, she's completely and utterly pointless. She exists solely to justify the existence of Leon's ring. Worse, it implies that Leon had an entire growth arc that fundamentally changed him, but it all happened completely off-screen, and we never get to actually see it.

And this isn't even touching on the fact that revealing a brand-new character to be Leon's wife is a massive, massive gamble for Capcom that yields them very little reward. They would have to sell audiences on the idea that a random woman just... appeared, somehow, in Leon's life, and she's so Super Saiyan God-tier Amazing that she snatched attention away from every other relationship in Leon's life and overwrote years of character development for him when we weren't looking.

That's a hard fucking sell, especially for a character as beloved as Leon.

And Capcom spent most of RE9's pre-release handwringing over whether the playerbase would like and accept Grace.

Do you really think they're going to make a gamble like this for Leon's wife?
