ik i'm guilty of making a similar joke but. "how could a man write a woman character so well" is like. i mean do you not see how you are propagating gender essentialist thinking here + playing into "woman's mind is unknowable to man" ideology
Like, no, I don't think loanwords have to be pronounced the way they are in the source language. But insisting that the Spanish e sound is essentially the same as the English "ey" is just stupid.
How do anglophones even learn languages in school?? Basically every single language I've ever learned has required learning phonemes that don't exist in Finnish! Most Finnish people are perfectly capable of pronouncing θ, ð and ʒ, none of which exist in Finnish!!
The Neil Gaiman example later in this thread is absolutely evergreen because he's such a perfect case study for "terrible people can make very good and very progressive, empathetic pieces of art". The sooner we stop conflating someone's morality with their work the better.
good evening. the “heated rivalry fandom” was a six month sociological study conducted by harvard university. we are now complete with our study. thank you for your time
confession i dont get why we judge a language for how it pronounces a loanword bc im pretty sure there isnt a single language on earth that actually preserves the native pronunciation of all its loanwords. like its literally a completely natural linguistic process you guys its ok
