NEW: President Trump makes a major promise at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas: $5,000 for every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans win both the House and Senate in the midterms.
“I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”
The entire internet (every email, video, search query, and transaction) travels as pulses of light through glass fibres thinner than a human hair.
Here's how it works:
THE BASIC PRINCIPLE: TOTAL INTERNAL REFLECTION
When light hits the boundary between two materials at a shallow enough angle, it doesn't pass through, it reflects back inside.
Optical fibre exploits this: a glass core surrounded by cladding with a slightly lower refractive index.
Light bounces down the fibre, never escaping, even around bends.
THE SIGNAL
Data is encoded as patterns of light pulses: on = 1, off = 0.
Modern fibres use multiple wavelengths of light simultaneously, each a separate data channel.
This is called wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM).
A single fibre strand can carry 100+ separate channels, each running at 100 Gbps or more.
One fibre: over 10 terabits per second of data capacity.
THE PROBLEM: ATTENUATION
Light loses intensity as it travels through glass.
After about 80–100 km, the signal is too weak to read.
Solution: optical amplifiers (erbium-doped fibre amplifiers, EDFAs) boost the signal without converting it to electricity.
THE CABLE
Undersea cables bundle dozens of fibre pairs together.
Each pair: one fibre transmitting in each direction.
Encased in steel, copper (for powering amplifiers), and polyethylene.
A typical transatlantic cable is about the diameter of a garden hose.
It carries the internet traffic of hundreds of millions of people.
The internet is a physical thing.
It's cables on the ocean floor, maintained by ships, vulnerable to anchors and earthquakes.
The cloud has a very specific address.
Another day at the office!

The German soccer fan's name is Sebastian, he said after meeting Bob, he extended his entire trip.
He said leaving America will hurt worse than watching Germany get knocked out of the World Cup.
"I fall in love with America. I'm sorry, it's just so emotional. Americans are not rude... if we are together, we can achieve great things."
