I have spent some time looking at and comparing unit trusts from @AllanGrayOrbis Namibia, @GroupCapricorn, @mandgsa Namibia, NAM Coronation, Ninety One Namibia, @OldMutualNam, and @STANLIB Namibia. Just to be clear: this is not all the providers we have. Namibia has around 19 or more unit trust providers and about 80 unit trust funds in total. I have only looked at some of them, especially those where the information was easy to find. Sometimes accessing fund data is not as straightforward as it should be. https://t.co/bw5ueNsHl3

You can’t just walk in from the street and say; “I want company XYZ” You must use JSE registered brokers. Wealthier individuals may have some optionality to partake in auction periods through direct market access which runs through trading service providers. (TSP). But everything ultimately still runs through the same infrastructure. When someone says go buy shares yourself, I don’t think they mean you can walk in from the street and say; “give me company XYZ”. Rather, they probably mean buying the company directly rather than owning it in an ETF. Either way, all these are considered financial assets (they are claims), a claim on the residual value of a company, and based on the hierarchy of importance (capital structure), equity holders rank lower than debt holders. So you are still entrusting your money to third parties. No bypassing this. There are only two forms of money that allows you to eliminate counterparty risk and third parties entirely. That’s by owning gold directly and Bitcoin in self-custody. Everything else becomes someone else’s liability.
