In Sri Lanka, I have the honour of meeting with representatives of the #Malaiyaham Tamil community.
@amnesty is conducting research on the human rights violations faced by the Malaiyaha Tamil plantation workers from the Southern tea estates.
This includes labour law violations and violence and abuse faced by the workers at the workplace. For decades, their daily life and working conditions have been harrowing. I met young women who have never been to school, others who face daily sexual harassment and threats. They have huge debts linked to borrowing money for school fees, medicine, transport.
Sec 358A of the Penal code criminalises debt bondage and forced or compulsory labour which is directly relevant to their situations.
However, lawyers have reported that the police is reluctant to include this offence in their B-reports, which is concerning because potentially grave criminal conduct is recorded as less-serious violations.
@amnesty is committed to fighting for their rights, alongside civil society activists, trade unionists and members of the community.
The judgement condemning unlawful demolitions as ‘unacceptable’ from the Supreme Court of India is a late but welcome move in upholding the rights of the people. #BulldozerInjustice

🚨🚨Bangladesh: Media reports state that security forces have been raiding neighbourhoods and conducting mass arrests, targeting students and opposition activists. Whereabouts of some of those arrested are unknown. Several student leaders have been arrested from the hospital where they were being treated for injuries.
In a virtual press conference held yesterday, a coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement alleged that over 3,500 students have been detained across the country.
Amnesty International urges the authorities to immediately stop the blanket hunt for students and opposition members.
Peaceful protest is not a crime.

Two days ago, the Israeli PM's official spokesperson @ofirgendelman shared a video of a "Hamas child actor in Gaza" claiming that Palestinians are faking their own injuries in the ongoing genocide of Gaza. But he's lying. Let's debunk it in this thread (credit to @misbarfc)🧵 1/
Today’s anniversary is a grim reminder of the collective failure of the Sri Lankan authorities and the international community to deliver justice to the many victims of Sri Lanka’s three-decade-long internal armed conflict. It is sobering to stand in the same place where, 15 years ago, countless civilian lives were lost during the last days of the war. - Agnès Callamard, Secretary General at Amnesty International from Mullivaikkal, Sri Lanka.

Tamils are being arrested for sharing kanji (rice gruel-only food available during last stages of war) and prevented from remembering ppl killed during last stages of the war. Aim of preventing memorialisation is to erase history and deny state responsibility for civilian deaths.

🇱🇰Lasantha Wickrematunge was assassinated on this day 15 years ago.
Despite the Sri Lankan government's assurances to resolve the case domestically, investigation has stalled. Justice has eluded his family to date, who have been continuing their fight for accountability for Lasantha's killing.
