Our organisations are socio-technical systems. Very often in our improvement efforts we over-focus on the technical (strategies, priorities, processes, methods, metrics) & under-focus on the socio (collaboration, agency, relationships, culture).
We have to work with both:
- Use systems to organise tasks AND rely on relationships to help motivate people.
- Create processes for consistency AND foster trust to handle the unexpected.
- Develop policies for accountability AND lean on connection to build engagement & belonging:

A few days ago I posted about "Hope for cynics", the new book by the neuroscientist @zakijam. Here's another article he's written: https://t.co/eewNKoC9Qn. People don't typically have "cynical personalities". Rather, the social environment significantly shapes our willingness to give & earn trust. Cynicism spreads socially in poor work environments. Some people think it's a good thing to have cynics in a group as they bring different thinking. But this author would question that. He says cynicism is a tool for sustaining the status quo, as it shuts down new ideas & opportunities for trust, collaboration & community. I know multiple people who are curious & creative but they didn't get supported or listened to in the past so they stopped taking risks. Hope matters.

"Mattering" is the belief that we’re significant to the world around us. When people feel they matter, they feel seen, important & needed through how others treat them. Scholars have deemed mattering to be a core instinct that drives all human behaviour. That’s why, when someone doesn’t believe they matter at work they:
- won’t share their voice if they don’t believe their voice is significant
- won’t use their strengths if they don’t believe they have strengths
- won’t contribute if they don’t believe they have something to contribute
- won’t care as much as if they feel cared for
Actions that leaders/ teams can take: see some excellent articles by @ZachMercurio - "How to Create Mattering at Work": https://t.co/vlxLnrqGWF and "The Cost of Not Mattering at Work": https://t.co/AocAKNMhxm.

"Zombie Leadership": dead & discredited ideas about leadership that continue to walk amongst us. They continue to be propagated by the media, popular books, consultants, workforce practices & policy makers. They stop more effective leadership practices from becoming mainstream. Four strategies to defeat Zombie Leadership:
1) Recognise components of Zombie Leadership
2) Return to the definition of leadership
3) Recognise the cost of Zombie Leadership
4) Champion alternatives to Zombie Leadership
