π¨ If you don't understand why 3 and 7 matter, you don't understand why the books keep winning. π¨
Since 2010, 1 in every 7 NFL games has ended by exactly 3 points. The next most common margin is 7, about 1 in 11. A margin of 4? Only 1 in 20.
Football scores move in field goals and touchdowns, so final margins pile up on 3 and 7. That's the trap.
Lay -3.5 and win by exactly 3, you lose. Lay -3 and win by exactly 3, you get your money back. Same game, same score. One ticket loses, one pushes, all because of half a point sitting on the most common margin in football.
Flip it. Take +2.5 and lose by 3, you lose. Take +3, you push. Take +3.5, you win.
The books know exactly where the margins land. Most bettors don't. Every week people lay -3.5 when -3 was sitting at another book, or grab +2.5 because "it's basically 3."
It isn't. Know the number before you pick a side.
Which one has burned you more, 3 or 7? π
The teams that finish the most drives with touchdowns (Lions, 49ers, Bills, Cowboys, Jaguars) have seen their games go over 18 of 28 times, with Detroit 5-0.
The fewest (Bucs, Vikings, Browns, Chargers, Titans): under 18 of 27.
Which team here surprises you most?
@SharpFootball Games involving the top 5 punt teams have gone under 19 of 28 this season, even with totals already sitting around 42. Punts show up in the final score.
@JTFOz And the number's still there. Browns -1.5 hasn't moved since it opened, so a win by 2 or more cashes it. Total's crept up from 36.5 to 38 though, so the market's expecting a little more scoring than the open.
The Bengals-Ravens line in the 1st half is still Ravens -2.5, but the price moved: Cincinnati Bengals now -128, was -103. Also moving: Bengals-Ravens 1st-half total.
Where do you think the first one closes?

@AdamSchefter Fun wrinkle: the AFC 1-seed is a 2.5-point underdog this Sunday. Undefeated Chiefs getting points in Seattle, against a 3-3 team that's not even on this chart.
@ActionNetworkHQ It's not just a 2026 thing. Since 2010, NFL favorites laying 7.5 to 9.5 have covered just 46% of the time. And both of these have grown this week: Texans now -10.5 and Vikings -6.5 after opening -9.5 and -5.5.
@johnewing@Bet_Labs@Chiefs And the upset isn't as wild as it sounds: NFL dogs of 3 have won outright about 4 in 10 times since 2010. If you like KC, the +3 on that card is the one to grab, Pinnacle's only at +2.5.
The line moved toward Panthers all week, Philadelphia Eagles -0.5 to Carolina Panthers -2.5 in the first half, and Panthers covered. Panthers won the half 10-7.
NFL Week 6: where they closed.

Bengals are coming off a bye and Lamar Jackson is still day-to-day for Baltimore after the 13-10 loss at Cleveland. The Ravens opened Monday night at -3 and sit at -2.5 now, so the line stepped off the 3. Anyone grab the Bengals +3?
NFL Week 6 recap: 12 of 20 finished on the side the line moved toward, measured against the opening number. Breakdown on the card.
Past results don't predict future ones.

Giants fans are still unpacking that 34-27 loss to the Saints, and Harbaugh was still "honing in on" a QB call Monday. Houston opened -9.5 Sunday night and sits at -10 Tuesday morning, through a number games often land on. Anyone grab the 9.5?
π¨ The line never moved. The price did. π¨
78% of the spread bets on Monday night were on the 49ers. The number sat at -7.5 all week, so it looked like nothing was happening.
Look closer. At Pinnacle, Commanders +7.5 went from -106 to -114. The 49ers side got cheaper. The bigger tickets were on Washington, and the price showed it even when the number didn't.
Final: 49ers 23, Commanders 17. Washington +7.5 covered by a point and a half.
When the line stays put, watch the price.
Did you catch it? π
The Steelers-Saints line in the 1st half is still Steelers -0.5, but the price moved: Pittsburgh Steelers now -125, was -105. Also moving: Browns-Titans.
Where do you think the first one closes?

@CaesarsSports Why it's still 7.5: the price is moving instead. At Pinnacle, 49ers -7.5 went from -106 to +103 this week and Commanders +7.5 from -106 to -114. And your own split shows it: 78% of spread bets on SF, only 63% of the money. The bigger tickets are on Washington.
@victorbelikov@BookitWithTrent Ha, it is! But at -110 you need 52.4% just to break even, so "almost half" is a losing bet over time. 46% loses about 12 cents on every dollar you lay.
Colts fans are hurting after the home loss to the Titans, and Vikings fans are enjoying a 5-0 start. Pinnacle opened this total at 42.5 Sunday night and has it at 41.5 Monday afternoon. Anyone grab the 42.5?
