I think that there’s been a growth in that respect because I think that I used to be a very fear-based person. And, um, I think that when I used to meet people, I probably projected a sense of awkwardness. And some things happened… (laughs) Sorry to keep doing this to you, but something happened when I turned 40.

And I just realized I was living my life like it was a dress rehearsal, and that actually it was showtime. And I just kind of outgrew my awkwardness like that because I was no longer interested in that feeling. I’m like, “Okay, babe, we have explored this. We have literally… I don’t know that anybody has ever had an awkward phase that’s lasted quite this long.”

Just, not to sound cheesy, but rejoice in the person before you. Like, I really use the word miracle a lot, but it’s so crazy that we’re here. It’s such a gift. So just focus on them. Just focus on the pleasure of meeting a new person. And it just opened up.

So, I don’t know. I think I present like a chill, friendly vibe now.

My mom modeled this type of behavior to me. She scoffed at women in public who clearly put time and care into their appearance. She would often say things like “who does she think she is?” Or “she so full of herself”. And it wasn’t just women in revealing outfits. It was women wearing powerfully beautiful pieces, especially heels.

It had a major negative impact on me that I’m still working through. I downplayed my wardrobe and tried not to look too put together or fancy for most of my life. I wanted to wear beautiful outfits that I looked great in, but I often decided against it because I didn’t want to be judged. I was doing my confidence and expression as a woman such a disservice.

If I have daughters, I will never put down other women who take pride in how they present themselves.
