You've probably seen models advertised with 128K, 200K, or even 1M token context windows.

But what does that actually mean?

✨ What is a Context Window?

A context window is the maximum amount of tokens an LLM can process as context for a request.

Think of it as the model's working space for that request.

The context can include :
→ System instructions
→ User prompt
→ Conversation history
→ RAG results
→ Tool responses

✨ But what exactly are tokens?

LLMs don't process text as individual words.

They break text into smaller pieces called tokens.

For example:
"How to connect to the database?"

gets broken into a sequence of tokens that the model processes.

A token can be :
→ A whole word
→ Part of a word
→ Punctuation
→ Other small pieces of text

So when a model has a 100K token context window, it can process up to roughly 100,000 tokens of context for that request, subject to the model's specific limits.

✨ What counts as tokens?

Tokens aren't limited to the user's prompt.

An AI request can involve tokens from :

→ Input : system instructions, prompts, conversation history, RAG context, tool results

→ Output : tokens generated by the model

→ Reasoning : some reasoning models may use separate reasoning tokens

The exact way these are counted or billed depends on the model and API provider.

✨ Why does it matter?

More context doesn't automatically mean better AI.

The application still needs to decide what information is worth putting into the context.

That's why things like RAG, memory, and context engineering are important.

This is relevant across modern AI applications and tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Bug0, and KaneAI, where the application may need to combine instructions, conversation history, retrieved knowledge, tool results, and other context.

Context window = how much information the model can work with at once.
