Once I was delayed for 8 hours in the middle of winter at O'Hare in Chicago. When we were finally boarding, a pilot deadheading was right in front of me. I asked him what he knew about the delay, and he said that conditions at altitude had been really icy.

I asked what that would mean, and he said, "If the plane ices up, then it would just nosedive into the earth."

I said, "You know, I don't mind the 8-hour delay so much any more."
