If you're interested in finding out more about the work we do in any of the areas we've posted about this week, then please join us TOMORROW at @CulverSquare between 11am and 4pm. There's free food! (3/3)
#colchester
One of our environmental projects is the wonderful @wildtribeheroes books. These gentle stories aim to teach children about environmental issues in an inspiring way with happy endings & ideas for the future. Lions Clubs purchase sets of the books for local primary schools. (2/3)
Our final global cause is the environment which sees us aiming to sustainably protect and restore our environment to improve the well-being of all communities. (1/3)
The Lions @GleaningHub is part of @feedbackorg Gleaning Network & has gleaned over 30 tonnes (the equivalent weight of around 5 π) of fruit & veg, including π,π,π§ & leeks! Weβve recently gleaned π that will be turned into some scrumptious food at our event on Saturday. (3/3)
Gleaning is a term used to describe collecting & redistributing perfectly edible & nutritious fruit & vegetables from farms & orchards that would otherwise be surplus. Gleaning ensures that some of this edible food surplus is redistributed to those that need it. (2/3)
Our penultimate global cause is hunger which is about ensuring that all community members have access to nutritious foods. One of our projects in this area is gleaning. (1/3)
One of our projects is Lions Recycle for Sight which collects unwanted spectacles & recycles them for re-distribution to people who would not otherwise have access to spectacles. (2/2)
Sight is the next global cause that weβll be sharing more info about on Saturday. We've a long history of serving the blind & visually impaired, & remain committed to preventing avoidable blindness & improve the quality of life for people who are blind & visually impaired. (1/2)
With training from @DiabetesUK, Lions offer βknow your riskβ assessments to help the public understand their risk of contracting diabetes. Early intervention & lifestyle changes can prevent or delay diabetes so itβs really important to identify those most at risk. (2/2)
In no particular order, our next global cause is diabetes. Diabetes is a global epidemic, affecting an increasing number of men, women, and children all over the world. Our aim is to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve quality of life for those diagnosed. (1/2)
1st up is childhood cancer. One project example is our partnership with @braintumourrsch. Sadly, brain tumours kill more children than leukaemia so we're aiming to raise Β£1m over 4 years to help fund game-changing research & raise awareness of the impact of brain tumours (2/2)
Join us on Saturday to find out more about the fantastic work that @lionsclubs do (as well as free food made from produce that would've gone to waste!). Each day this week we'll be talking about 1 of the 5 global causes that much of our work serves to make a difference to. (1/2)
1 week to go! Join us on 13th November to find out more about the valuable work that @lionsclubs do in their local communities, including work in the areas of childhood cancer, diabetes, sight, hunger and the environment.
According to @hubbubUK, a terrifying 14.5 million pumpkins are expected to be left uneaten this Halloween in the UK alone. Join us on 13th November in #Colchester to enjoy some pumpkin soup and learn more about how we can all do our bit to tackle #foodwaste
What better vegetable to make use of at our event than the glorious pumpkin! Weβre gleaning several pumpkins locally to Colchester that will be used to make soup by @FoodForAllHQ. @ColchesterInst will also be cooking up some scrumptious food!
Our Colchester event wonβt be quite as big as our Leicester one but thereβs still plenty to do while enjoying a free bite to eat so if you live near #Colchester then join us on 13th November 11-4 @CulverSquare. Link to Facebook event in bio
Following the success of our 2018 event in Leicester, we're back! Join us on 13th November in Colchester for another Feeding the 5000 #colchester#foodwaste#charity
