#ThoughtForTheDay What other profession besides teaching do we know that can do 12 months of work in 9 months? Teachers shouldn’t feel guilty for the breaks they get during the holidays/summer months. They need this time away to recharge so they can be at their best... #Culturize

“It doesn’t have to be this way: Schools could be renovated for their existing communities rather than for interlopers... Relationships, community, and the will of the people could be placed at the center of the design process instead of shunted to the periphery.”
McCormack Middle School teacher Neema Avashia writes about what’s happening to her school. She draws parallels to the harm done to Chicago's children by school closings, described in Eve Ewing's book, Ghosts in the Schoolyard. #bps#buildbps#bospoli

Proud to see @McCormackMiddle students flexing their civic muscles today as they showed up at CIty Hall and met with US House Candidate @AyannaPressley to talk #BuildBPS

“The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to speak openly & candidly on the subject of race, & to apply the Constitution with eyes open to the unfortunate effects of centuries of racial discrimination.”-Justice Sotomayor https://t.co/juLyWUl8I3 via @educationweek
This is why the work of @selmekki and @BMECFellowship is so vital! While our urban students, particularly those of color, benefit from teachers of color, students in rural communities also desperately need teachers of color and exposure to diverse viewpoints and experiences.
It’s not radical to address issues of racism and violence in our classrooms. It’s a necessity. Oftentimes what our students need isn’t part of a standard curriculum. Take a moment to close those lesson guides and educate with the purpose of changing their world!
Powerful observation, Chris.. and at the same time, these teachers becoming (or rather, continuing to be) models for their students. And all of us. Thank you for elevating.
One of my very quiet 8th graders stayed after school to create this petition asking that our school be kept open. Please support her in developing her strong voice by signing! https://t.co/s9bvwT1Cob #NoBuildBPS
Hi Laureen, certainly might be true in some instances (similar to any other district), but there are others who are top notch as well. As always, a complex picture— but your point about engaging accomplished (and current) classroom teachers and school leaders? Definitely..
Are there educators in BPS central office trying to do best by families, teachers and kids? Yes. But should they listen to teachers, especially ones like @AvashiaNeema, who live and breathe all that is good and amazing about BPS students, teachers and communities? Double yes.
So many wonky #BuildBPS slides, not a single one stating values or beliefs about community. Here’s my proposed text:
1) We believe communities should be kept intact during renovation. 2) We believe that the community deserves priority in returning to a renovated bldg. #BOSPoli
Most of the world saw throngs of desperate foreigners. Sugihara saw human beings and he knew he could save them through prosaic but essential action.. https://t.co/1Yyj9kJkF7
