one thing that bothers me in FP is in the use of `reduce(..)` as a general tool to represent other kinds of iterators -- specifically that `reduce(..)` doesn't provide for short-circuiting of the iteration.

it makes me wonder, is short-circuited iteration incompatible w/ FP?
