@Birdyword Japan was cut off from Western culture for centuries and then made a conscious effort to catch up with modernity so they wouldn't end up being someone's colony. Italy has always seen itself as being at the epicenter of Western culture and didn't feel the need to "catch up".

Sharp stabbing pains in the bones is almost never sickle cell in Swedes so there no point in testing their hemoglobin for this.

Would you torture the black guy in order to be antiracist?

@Osint613 If Russia had scrupulously avoided hitting civilian targets I would say that this was wrong - Wildberries was only marginally contributing to the war effort. But Russia has been intentionally hitting civilian targets in Ukraine from day 1 and the bombs cannot only go one way.

@tomfgoodwin Just like there are no French fries in France, there is no Italian food in Italy. There is just food. This is what they consider to be food. Keep in mind that until recently Italy (esp. the south) was a relatively poor country so they didn't have a lot of immigrants coming in.

@learning_yohei Even native English speakers sometime mix up the spelling of these words - "I pressed on the break pedal" is a common error.

Although words are very distantly related, they are just basically homonyms, like hashi means bridge and chopsticks. Japanese has plenty of homonyms.

@learning_yohei These are all the same concept. You are doing a continuous task and then you "break" from that routine. When you wake up you have fasted all night and now you are "breaking" that fast. Imagine that you are plotting something (working, eating) on a graph - you "break" that line.

@D296919768017 @kenanmalik These are all good questions. Of course DNA gives us a lot of the answers but having a even a rough idea of something is better than nothing. Just because categorizing people can be abused doesn't mean that it can't be useful in certain (e.g. medical) contexts.

Categories don't have to be strictly scientific in order to be useful for practical purposes.

The ability to determine what "biologically linked group" you belong to is medically and scientifically important and cannot be ignored in the name of an ideological agenda. @XXXBUMI You can always add your own salt to taste (but you can't take it away). A lot of cultures have a bland unsalted food that you serve alongside a salty food. Fufu has little or no salt.

@RachelMoiselle Most persecutions of Jews in the past were religious - if you would just convert to their religion, they would (theoretically) leave you alone. Nazi persecution OTOH was race based and inescapable. But that doesn't mean that it had "nothing to do with religion". Oversimplified.
